because increasing the area of the housing will increase spool time.

no not yet. been busy with work. gotta find the time to pull the motor to swap out the piston still.

Work's over-rated, just quit. You got more important stuff to do like finish this turbo thing.

lol. no work no money for turbo stuff.

got the motor out and on the stand. definitely melted a hole. i had looked like it broke off but its clear now that isnt the case. busted a piston skirt off of that cylinder too, opposite the hole. another piston is missing a skirt so im back in the hunt for a stock replacement. was trying to get it all back together to take to the track on friday night for a test and tune. my biannual race is next weekend. wanted to show up ready to run but ill have to see what happens. everything else in the motor looks good.

its been a little while but im making some progress. got the second piston in and the bottom end is buttoned up. ive had these enginbldr valves for a while and figured since i had the head off i would go for it. pulled all the valves and cut the seats today. tomorrow i am planning on doing a little bowl work and maybe some porting. my remflex gasket is stuck to the head so i might open the head up to match the ports on the gasket. not a whole lot to take off there. no pics, ill get some tomorrow if its not raining. ordered a victor reinz head gasket that was supposed to be mls but is not. i know they make them ive seen pics of them somewhere. still a toss up between the stock shim head gasket and the composite vr. at any rate its getting there. once i get it back together im gonna take it to the track for the tuning. cant wait. been a while since i was pushed back in the seat. others have tried but nothing has come even remotely close.

it feels better than it looks. wound up going with the stock steel shim head gasket. gonna see what happens. gonna be busy this weekend, hopefully have it all back together by the end of next week. once its back together i plan on taking the car to the shop for a mini tub and a leaf spring relocation. need more rubber.

Junior,

I think it was a quote from you where you implied that the suppsosed MLS head gasket from Victor Reinz, wasn't actually a multi-layer steel gasket, but I didn't completely understand that comment. Coulld you elaborate, please, and explain what you meant, because I'd lke to get one if you feel like they might could work in a turbo application, as a replacement for a copper gasket.

Please let me know what you have learned about these gaskets. I am clueless, here...

if you have gone through the trouble of o-ringing your block/head i wouldnt bother. dont think you are going to beat the copper/o-ring with a mls gasket.<img src="http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p79/weesers1/20150905_150506_zpsp8abbxpz.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150905_150506_zpsp8abbxpz.jpg"/>

this is not a slant gasket, just throwing it up for illustrative purposes. that is a variation of a multi layer steel gasket. ive seen them like this with only two layers up to a 2.0 vw gasket that had 4. the vr one that i saw somewhere had the more common 3 layers.

here is the victor reinz head gasket that was listed as a mls but is pretty clearly a composite.
<img src="http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p79/weesers1/20150828_190914_zpsk2dwyxk9.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 20150828_190914_zpsk2dwyxk9.jpg"/>

pretty sure the mls is more resistant to blowing out/melting if the tune isnt just right. i know the majority of the turbo imports i have taken apart have had them in there. i was going to run the vr gasket anyway but bent it when putting the head on so i wound up going with a stock stamped steel gasket because i had it laying around and wanted to get this thing back together.

its running again. i drilled the pvcr's and turned the boost down. threw a vte on the secondaries and its running rich on boost. thats good. i can take some jet out of the secondaries. cruise is a beautiful 13.5-13.8 the fuel curve is fast and on point. im happy again. the quick spool vavle is kinda working. the actuator i have to open the door is somewhere around 12psi and i can feel it fluttering trying to open at 8psi. in a 3rd gear pull it over boosted lol. not a problem ive had with this running the 20+psi usually. didint drive it long enough to see where it was spooling but feels sooner and faster. gonna try to get it down the track through the week to get it dialed in and i have a race on nov 8th if it makes it that long. gonna be turning the boost back up pretty quickly. should have more updates through the week and next weekend. looking for slicks or drag radials. the street tires dont cut it. i wanna try and post some sub teen ET's but ill be happy in the 13's.

got a little time in with it today. boost threshold went from 2200rpm down to 1700-1800. this is cruising at 30mph in 3rd gear and flooring it. just running through the gears it is much much more responsive. i can get full boost in 2nd gear now too. the afr's are good so i turned it back up and it is running beautifully at 22psi. i put a shout out to everyone i know around here that is into cars to try to find some used drag radials or slicks. if i can find a set for sunday i think im gonna drain the gas tank and throw some 110 in there and turn it up a little more.

took it for a test run, came to a stop and went to take back off. sounded like it kicked the belt off and it started missing. its done for now. not sure if it dropped a valve or spun a bearing or both but its done. ill post some carnage pics when i get it apart. i have a spare motor or two so it will be going again sooner or later just not right away.
