Hello,
Ordered a bunch of parts today for my turbo 225 project.
Is a Holley btm boostmaster an item worth purchasing? Some have locked out the distributor at 18 degress and say that this is a perfect low budget solution to ignition timing.
Question, how is locking out at 18 degrees achieved? What is physically done, and how is initial timing set? Is this a practical solution for street use?
This is a street car only, .
Blow thru carb, intercooled, boost referenced fuel pump regulator, and O2 sensor.
Thoughts?

If a street only car, you really need a "timing curve", or fuel mileage, and performance will suffer. What percentage of your driving will be under actual boost? Usually a very small percentage. When not under boost, the engine will act like NA, and will want timing advance. But timing will want to be dialed back under boost. There are several boost timing controls on the market. I can't comment on any of them.

I read this on Summit regarding the MSD BTM 5462

If you run a blower, turbo, or even a naturally aspirated engine, MSD's Boost Timing Masters allow you to run at the edge of detonation for maximum power output. They can prevent detonation by automatically retarding the timing as your manifold pressure increases. The secret lies in a boost pressure sensor that's inside MSD's solid-state control box. The sensor reads boost pressure through a 1/8 in. vacuum hose attached to a boost pressure source. The result gives you peak power without harmful detonation. A dash-mounted control knob allows you to dial in the retard from 1 to 3 degrees per pound of boost pressure, up to a maximum retard of 15 degrees. Vacuum tubing is not included. These units must be used with an MSD 6, 7 or 8 series ignition.

If you can afford it, get the MSD 6530 with an added MAP sensor. Needs some programming. Man, the price has really gone up. BTM will likely be fine, but heck the 6530 does SO much more for only $30 more. You can get a "lean burn" distributor, which was locked from the factory, or you can braze/solder/weld the advance mechanisms shut on a regular dist.

Agreed - it's typically a better deal here to get your ignition module upgrade and timing control in one package if you're doing a carbed build, rather than having two separate boxes. Fuel injected builds would have the EFI system controlling timing.
