Hi guys,

I have an opportunity to pick up a single barrel carb intake and could use a 20,000 foot answer on this. Is is reasonably possible to modify the manifold to accept a supercharger out of an old Riviera or whatever else I can scrounge from a junkyard?

Sincerely,

Paul Barrow

If you mean from a Buick or Pontiac turbocharger, the answer is yes. Several have done it, including myself with a Corvair turbo.

Here's where I would start. Make a plate to match the base of a Holley 2300 series 2 bbl. Cut and shape the manifold to make a nice area to weld the new carburetor pad to the intake manifold. Mount a blow-through Holley 2300.

Figure out where you can mount the blower. Get the M90 from the later GM products or a 3.8 Ford. The M62 on the early GM V6s is a bit small.

Find a place for an intercooler. Plumb from the blower to intercooler to carb.

You need a higher pressure fuel system. Add 5 psi to however much boost you expect to run plus a cushion of 4 psi. So a minimum 19 psi pump for 10 psi. You'll need a boost referenced pressure regulator and a return line.

You can also do draw-through, but that doesn't allow for intercooling. It does, however get you out of the high pressure fuel system.

I would definitely pick up a couple books on supercharging and turbocharging to get a handle on a ll the ins and outs. We haven't even covered timing control or detonation suppression.

Thanks guys, this will be way down the road, but if I can get the manifold cheap I figure I can hold onto it. Joshie, I'll keep your notes handy for when I finally get there!

Sincerely,

Paul

PS: Hoping to get my frame in the next few weeks to mount the engine in.

PPS: What books would you recommend?

Will it be port fuel injected? If so, the answer is no. The base plate for a GM M90 will be too wide and there will be no room for the injectors on the runners.
