The story is: The throttle stuck on the Barracuda. I am not an early A body throttle expert, but it was said the throttle linkage on those cars goes through the floor board. The linkage got bent and when the brakes were applied the throttle got pushed open.
Sad end to a nice Barracuda, regardless.

and here the guy just overdrives the trucks brakes, the run starts at about the 4:30 mark on the video

Both were at the same event.
The track layout did not provide any relief for mechanical or driver error.
Watch the second video from the start, every car shown was in a full panic stop after crossing the finish line.
Not a good thing.

I thought the V-8 cars had a cable throttle?

My 66 had linkage, but it was a Slant.

Perhaps the car was originally a slant motor and the slant was removed, a v8 installed with some Rube Goldberg throttle linkage. I really don’t know. Just thought these big hits in what is normally considered a somewhat safe auto sport was interesting.

The place in the videos looks scary, even if everything is going right.

They used to hold them in the east end of the pits at RT66. Lots of run-off room there.

Even though I readily admit that corners scare the crap out of me, it still seems like you'd want some extra real estate just in case.

You definitely want that run off room. I speak from first hand experience…

Mario Andretti once said ‘if there are not times when you walk back to the pit carrying your helmet, you are not trying hard hard enough.’

When in doubt gas it. It may not solve the problem but it will end the suspense.
