Thank you very much matv91 for this additional information (this post and the last several). I very much wish it would bolt/clamp in, but from the link you provided a couple of posts back, it looks like newer vans have a (normal, typical) fuel filler cover door. Older vans like mine do not:

(The fill pipe is still out of the van. Life has had other plans for me these last couple of weeks.) There’s no fill door: the pipe is a 90° to the side of the vehicle. I can’t tell from your photo: does the ’86 you saw have (or had before it was removed) a fuel filler cover door?

Will look closer next time at yard at fill tube. Found 97 van,same style tube.and vent line. 2000 van had different vent style in fill tube and 5/8 vent line

You findings confirm my initial suspicions. These vans were designed with old fuel fill nozzle technologies in mind.

FYI- The Dodge B series van (of which yours is one) remained VERY little changed from 1979 through the end of the run in 2003. I think you could very easily install a later fill pipe into your van. It might even be a direct bolt in. I know the body sheet metal (other than the grill and front fenders) did not change significantly from 79-03. If necessary you could swap the entire fuel tank and fill pipe from a later van into yours.

If you manage to accomplish this, let me know since I would like to do it to my brother's van.

As far as tank pressurizing, I don't recall ever experiencing it when I filled my brother's van. but I will ask him and let you know what he says.

Except for the fuel door and related sheet metal issue. Not sure how long this image is going to be good, but for now, look at this:

(Not sure why this image tag isn’t working. Don’t have time to fix it at the moment.)

Notice that there’s a fuel door, whereas on mine, it’s the old-style exposed gas cap. From what matv91 posted (click for the full-sized image) above, the angle of the filler has changed. I am certainly not ruling this out and further investigation is warranted, but it appears that by the time Chrysler made material changes to the fill pipe venting, they also changed the whole filler design so it was behind a door and at a different angle. I might have to change the rear quarter? panel. Not saying i would never go there, but i’d prefer a less intrusive solution (i’m not a bodywork guy. This sounds like it might get into $money$).

Weird. My brother's 83 has a fuel door. In fact, I have owned a 74, a 78, two 79s, an 83, and an 86 Dodge van, and the ONLY one of the bunch that DIDN'T have a fuel door was the 74. I don't know why your van doesn't have a fuel door.

My brother tells me that sometimes his 83 does have a pressurized gas tank when he takes the fill cap off.

Neither do i.
Just tried looking at Google Images: very, very few actual 1981 vans, and fewer showing enough of the left side to see the fuel filler area. The two i saw did have visible gas caps, like mine.

I have a photocopy of the 1978-81 Light Truck Parts Catalog. To make this even more bizarre, there is no sign in either the Fuel or Body sections of a fuel door. The only gas caps are painted and woodgrain—not a plain bare metal one that would be used behind a fuel door. My van came with a chrome with black handle gas cap, but i cannot be sure it was original. This is self-consistent with my own experience, but directly contradicts your real-world experience, making things even more bizarre.

I’m certainly going to pay more attention to this out on the road and in yards!
