Removed all three carbs and disassembled them. Cleaned everything manually and then dropped everything into the ultrasonic cooker from work. It does a really nice job of cleaning, especially all the internal passages and jets that need cleaned. I reassembled them with the new 40MM venturis and then went up one size on the main fuel jet as a starting point. Just waiting on some new mounting gaskets and then they can go back on the car and be tested. I feel like I have a lot better handle on how these carbs work now, since I did 3 of them. I probably better wait and see if it starts and runs before I say that !! :D :D

Would it be possible to put a petcock on the fuel line to the carbs?

I turn off the petcock and run it until it dies to avoid gumming up the carb.

I then added a fuel valve to my lawnmower to do the same thing.

Yes I could put on a shut off. But I generally run my car all winter long. Usually just in and out of the garage to work on something else. On the Webers you could actually remove the little top cover and unscrew one of the emulsion tubes (About 10 seconds total) and have access to the clear bottom of the float bowl. Then just suck out all the gas and the carbs would be dry.
At work I see a lot of times when people drain their carbs by running them till they stop, that there is still a small amount of fuel laying in the bottom of he bowl. So it is probably better to get it all out if you can. I honestly was not having any problems with my carbs. I was just updating the venturis and it made sense to clean them while they were apart.

Everything is back together and ready to go. I did fire it up just for a minute or two, so it does run! :D But it was mid 20's out, here last night and it was too cold to run it for long. Once we get a 40 -50 degree day I'll run it for a while longer and see how things look. RC

Well it is still in the 20's outside ( And windy) but I got tired of waiting to fire the engine up. I hooked up the battery charger and got it running although it was kind of finicky at first. After it ran for about 2 or 3 minutes it became a little more normal sounding. I ran it for over 20 minutes and the fan never kicked on and it never got above 150 degrees. Engine sat and idled at 1200 rpm and sounded good. High rpm smoothed out nicely and the sound hurt my ears very well! :D I will wait till warm weather and then run the whole synchronizing procedure and then go racing.

Only thing I did notice was a little bit more of a "puff" back though the carbs at about 1500-2500 rpms. Kind of hit and miss and on different cylinders all the time. It probably is just the big cam / overlap. It may have been there before but I didn't notice it as much.

Mason Dixon here we come! Carb jets for tuning in hand!

Glad to hear it, Rick! You will notice those puffs much more in the cold weather since things don't evaporate as easily...

Yes I figured 20 degrees and 25 mph winds flowing through the garage were not helping! :D :D

Didn't you also have filters on the air horns?

If so I doubt you would see that reversion.
