I have a good (empty) 489 case for an 8 3/4" rear. I need a 742 case in the same condition. Anyone have one they want to swap. It would be nice if it was on the east coast somewhere.

Drop me a PM

Its debatable..

He obviously needs a 742.. i have invested in 489.

I think the 742 was the version that they made the aluminum case for!

I have a set of gears for the 742 case.

I have a few 741s too, which are perfectly fine for anything we will throw at them, with very few exceptions.

When I was moving my junk to the big garage I saw a chunk of metal that looked like a center section... I'll look more closely and let ya know.

Thanks for the link to the DrDiff article. Makes sense to me.

His article on Green bearings also jives with my feelings and experiences. I have seen zero problems with those and do not hesitate to use them. NOTE that I have cut/sanded down a few axle ends to make SURE there is no side preload on the bearings.

I'm in the process of putting together a 742 right now. It's a little easier to do a 742 than a 489, but not enough to worry about.

Getting a solid spacer to replace the crush sleeve on the 489 makes it much nicer.

I have a 741 3.91 SG that I have beat on for years. It took the brunt of all my spray antics even with a trans brake. Never hurt it a bit.

I have all 3! :D 3.91 & 3.23 are -741, 3.55 & 4.30 are 489, and the 4.56 & 4.86 are 742.
