I recently upgraded my manual '65 valiant 170 to a super six 2 barrel intake. I have a carter carb on there. The car turns on but the choke is EXTREMELY picky. It has to be between about 40-50 degrees. Any more or less and the car will not run. When the car does run, it idles high even with the throttle at idle (throttle plates closed all the way).

Can anyone help? My carb has a hole in each throttle plate and I've heard this may cause problems when going to super six? Also, for those of you that have done this swap, how did you modify the choke lever from the slant six to work with the 2 barrel carb?

Sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere.......
There are several things you can spray around the areas that might be leaking such as WD40,Quick Start,or,Break Clean .... WD40 is probably the safest to use.....
When spraying if it gets drawn into a leak you will hear a change in the sound of the motor

Massive vacuum leak/way too lean.

Have you checked the egr valve for a leak?

You may want to plug the holes and see if that helps. (It could be the problem on the small 170)

For a real quick test, a proper size sheetmetal screw can be installed along with a "dab" of epoxy.

If this solves the problem, it is best to remove the throttle blades and solder shut the holes as the "long-term" solution. ( if a screw gets loose and goes through the motor, it's big trouble)

For the choke linkage, I used a small "L" shaped piece of metal that I loosly attached to one of the carb bolts, then made two linkage rods out of copper wire, one connected to the choke spring and the other to the carb. Well I just added a 2 barrle intake and a Carter carb onto my '72 Dart. I havn't had any troubles with the carb BUT I do know where you might find a linkage. The late 70's Dodge Aspen Station wagons had Aluminum 2 barrle intakes and the Carter Carbs on them (I got mine off of the Plymoth Vorler, or however you spell it) the linkage is straight BUT there's a little block on it that has a hole for the linkage from the carb and a studd & pin for the trans mount.
