I have noticed on some ebay auctions & other sites that the toad they were selling had a plate blocking off the factory heater core box opening & then they had hoses running to through the firewall similar to 63 & later styles.

My question is this a factory swap( late model change) or have individuals swapped the 63 & later box into thier 60-62 cars-- thanks

Dan what is the scoop?

Factory installed heater/defogger on the LH-drive '60-'62 A-bodies was the Model 711 (1960 Valiant) / Model 719 (1961-62 Valiant/Lancer). This is the one with the big fibreglass housing on the firewall, protruding into the engine bay. The differences are completely trivial between these two units (the heater water control valve is very, very slightly different) and all components interchange.

Cars ordered without factory heater/defogger had a blockoff plate covering the cowl air window and blower motor hole. These cars could have a recirculating-air type heater installed by the dealer. This was basically a box with a heater core and a fan, residing completely inside the passenger compartment, and heating only the air already inside the car (not pulling in outside fresh air). In addition to this Mopar accessory heater, there were aftermarket heaters of this type available when these cars were new/young.

So, I'm pretty sure that's what you're seeing. It would take a great deal of work (and probably a turbocharged, intercooled magic wand running on nitromethane) to put a '63-up A-body heater box into a '62.

Thanks Dan---
I'm fresh out of nitro at the moment -- so I'll leave my model 719 in place --- Lawrence
