Thanks for the specific instructions below on how to pull the inst. cluster, since I will probably have to (carefully) take mine out for this... Before I do so and get lost in the multicolored wire world, I figured I'd ask the experts. My turn signal indicator is wacky. The right indicator doesn't work at all (most likely the bulb) but the left stays on constantly IF my headlights are on. If they aren't, it operates perfectly. This may also have something to do with the fact that when the headlights are on, the blinkers flash much slower than normal. Any ideas on where to look for the problem before I mess a bunch of stuff up? And, does anyone have a replacement instrument cluster cover, just in case.....
Thanks!

just in case you are wondering, they won't give me an inspection sticker if I don't fix it. I mean really!

It sounds like you have problems not confined to the instrument cluster. The symptoms you describe sound like faulty grounds in the turn signal and headlamp circuits, which means you need to go to the front of the car, find the ground wires, remove them from where they attach to the front sheetmetal, clean everything up really well, preferably run ground wires to a real ground (such as the "GRD" hole on the back of the alternator housing). You may also have corroded or otherwise deteriorated front turn signal sockets contributing to the problem. I think once you get the problems with the circuit itself cleared up, the instrument panel indicator lights will probably start working correctly again.

Just to clarify, it is the dash panel indicator that is wacky, the actual blinkers work fine... I'll still check out the ground though.

That "blinkers-slow-down-with-headlamps-on" business has me thinking ground problems in the actual blinker circuit. Is this the case whether the engine is idling or revved up?

You'll want to check the ground integrity of the instrument cluster itself, too.

Dan, how would you exactly do that? My instrument cluster is held in with 6 screws, 4 on top and 2 on bottom, it seems like they screw through the plastic parts though, not the metal on the cluster.

Without looking at my own '71's cluster, I can't say for sure, but the ground for the IP will be accomplished one of two ways: Either you'll have a ground wire in one of the multi-wire connetors pushed onto the back of the IP circuit board, or all the circuit board's ground paths will lead to a copper ring around one of the screw holes in the board, and the ground will be achieved (kinda, sorta...) through contact of this copper ring with the dashboard metal once the IP is tightened into place.

Woah interesting, can anyone verify if the ground-ring is on a '71 cluster?
