Instead of rebuilding the 904, my first post-tune up project will be to swap it out for a late model 833 w/ OD 4th gear. So far my shopping list is:

'75-87 A-body A833 (will be trying hard to find one with all shifter linkage and bench seat-compatible hardware)
Slant '75-81 aluminum bellhousing (just to ensure it'll accept the 5.125" beraing retainer)
Floor hump (still need to source one)
Shifter linkage and hardware if I can't get it on the tranny
124 tooth flywheel (will have to measure my engin's register hub first. Any recommendations on whether to go OEM or if there's an aftermarket alternative?)
Clutch & pressure plate. Here's where I'm still fuzzy. Should I stick with a 9.25" clutch kit, or would you guys recommend beefing up the clutch linkage (and chassis mounting point for the Z-bar) and using a 10" clutch kit? Any brand recommendations? I see there are several available.

Anything else to keep my eye out for that isn't covered in the 4-speed article linked on the home page?

I know where there is an Apsen station wagon with a slant 6 and 4 speed OD. It's about an hour out of Spokane. Don't know if they are going to sell it, though, so it might be a dead end.

You would still need pedals, and the floor hump, unless the F-body one would work.

When you get into town, send me a message and I will let you know where it is and get you some contact info.

I don't think it'd be very cost effective to buy a whole vehicle just for the transmission :P

I did the same swap on my Daily driver volare - However I did buy An aspen( 3speed floor shifter car) . It donated the column, the Pedals, The hump and Tranny wiring - Ialso Was able to pice the z bar and bell housing , clutch fork etc, off the car.

The Car More than paid for itself.

The only thing was I didnt get an 833 of of that car - I got one at a swap, rebuilt it then Yanked the 3 speed for the 833.

If you can get the wagon for less than $300 I say go for it, you can pay that for just a tranny some places. anyway, it willnot be a direct swap for you - Yow will still need the Pedals and a column from an abody car. Order a hump from one of the resto places.



OH yes, the shifter and the rods are sometimes hard to find too, That's why you might want to look at that wagon, The bellhousing flywheel, and Clutch Fork, and Possibly z bar stuff will work in your abody.

Basically A bunch of suff on the list you can get from just that wagon,

Flywheel
Bellhousing and Small related Supports and Covers
Tranny Wiring / Reverse Light Wiring
Z bar / Pivots
Clutch Fork
Shifter / Rods
Tranny
Driveshaft Slip yoke (it might need switched)


I say go with the 10" clutch - The stock 9 1/4" is wimpy, No additional requirements are needed for this clutch - Bolt it on and go!

buying a whole car just for a tranny and related components being worth it would depend on how "nice" the potential donor is..... I always had a problem parting a car in relatively good condition..... if it has mechanical trouble but a good body/interior, chances Id buy it and fix its mechanical trouble and look elsewhere for my needed parts (maybe "flip" it and be able to basically buy my needed parts with any profit made) but a wreck, or a rustbucket.... just think of it as "rebody-ing" the good parts! (no, it wouldn't necessarily have to have a Hemi..... :twisted: sorry just had to throw that one in there) many cars have been bought "for parts" that wound up in better shape than the car that the parts were supposed to be bought for.

It's in a hole in the wall wrecking yard, so if they are willing to do something with it other than let it sit, I'm sure they would part it.

They had a Dart I was hoping to get quarter off of for my Valiant. Turned out to be a '66, so it was no good. They wanted to sell me the whole car, and would take back what I didn't want after I had stripped it. They weren't going to give me money back, but I wouldn't have had to take the car home, either. Almost seems like they didn't really have the people to pull the parts.

The Dart did surrender a set of manual pedals and z-bar support off the frame. Still don't know what they would want for the hump.

Kind of a funny little place. Nice enough guys, but not really run like a wrecking yard.

No joke huh? Where's it at? If they only want 300 or 400 for it, sounds like it might not be a bad idea in that case.

Now I had thought if I use the 10" clutch, that it would be wise to beef up the Z bar mount and the Z bar itself because of the higher spring pressure. I figure that'd be easy enough, but is it really necessary for someone who uses the car as a DD and isn't racing it?

I have a yard like that near me. They just called me last week. They got a 67-69 Dart, a early 70's Valiant, and a Volare/Aspen. I need to get there and get the details (exact year, parts available, etc). They let me bring torches, etc, and get what I want, or even deliver the car to my house for stripping, and then pick up wats left. They are not equiped for pulling parts. They are a towing company.

The z bar will Be fine as will the Clutch Fork - The 9.25" will just slip and spin causing you to relpace the clutch sooner than if you had a 10 with adequate clamping power - It Probably makes more of a difference around here where you are either going up or down hill.
