hi, this is a vague and i'm guessing repeated or stupid question, i'm new to this i have had my 1970 valiant since november and its making a really loud noise out of the exhaust manifold.

i'm asking because it is comin from the 4th or 5 cylinder, i've forgotten which at the moment. but i know there is a rod goin from in the manifold to the carburetor.

is it common, i've just ordered a manual so i've got nothing in terms of part names to describe what i'm looking for.

thank you and pardon my lack of terms or vague ?'s

my great grandpa gave me the car i drove it from eugene oregon back to sacramento and i love everything about this car.

it runs a bit sluggish and i'd like to get her runnin like a champ again.

sounds like you have an intake/exaust manifold leak. the rod most likely is the kick down linkage if you have an automatic trans

A loud noise from the exhaust manifold ... The rod you describe sounds like the choke linkage. The choke pocket is right over #4 exhaust. Possibly an exhaust leak, either from between the gaskets and head, or the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds. See if you can isolate it a little closer. Either way, it's not hard to repair.

my bad there is also a choke linkage that comes off the exaust :oops:

thanks guys. ah, so its a choke. is it suppost to be loose. i can wiggle it back and forth with no effort.

It very possibly could be a cracked exuast manifold as they are are common on Slants.My daughter and I swapped out the manifolds on her 72 Valiant today because the heat damper was froze shut,after we got the exaust manifold off is when we discovered that it was cracked right below the choke pocket.

ooooh. not good to hear but nice to know.

i'll definatly be removing the manifold then. i've seen other intakes, is there anything worth replacing it with since it needs to come off anyway, same question bout the exhaust manifold.

anyone make a header for these models?

Headers are available just depends on what you want.

well, i'm not sure what i want. would be nice to have something that works what ever it is.


the noise is so loud now i have to do something. where do you get manifolds or headers from.

are the old manifolds worth getting welded.

New exhaust manifolds are available, as are junkyard parts. There are a couple of variations in the choke pocket, and cracks are common in older castings.

Headers are available. Expect to do some fitting.

A better alternative for many is the Dutra Dual - essentially a split cast exhaust manifold. Do a search, and read the article. This setup gives up little to headers in performance, can be quieter, and lasts longer.

I work at NAPA and did work for Carquest for a long time. I KNOW that NAPA lists new manifolds for slants, and I think Carquest may too. If you want to go back with new originals, they can be gotten easily. Davey

thanks again.

i checked out the dutra dual's. and ebay.

i want to go to a wrecking yard today, is there anything specific that i should look for on the wrecking/junk yard parts.

sacramento has TON of wrecking yards around here.

also saw the super six intake and exhaust. that looks nice.

just looked at napa and the stock exhaust manifold's are expensive.

i think i'm gonna look for a good super six intake and carb rebuild it(if it needs it). exhaust. i'm gonna look around and see what i can find before i make a certain decision.


you guys sure are helpful.

If you get a 2bbl setup, be sure you get all of it!
Like the kickdown linkage, including the little arm on the transmission.
At least if you have an automatic transmission.
Oh, get it anyway, people are always looking for that linkage stuff.


Uh, I might be off by a few years, but was there not a year or two that had a hole in the exhaust manifold, under the choke?
I think it used a thin metal gasket-ish thingie to seal the hole?

Just an idea?

i was checking out this auction.

also was looking at getting an electronic distributor. or a conversion kit. but i'm after the intake/exhaust first.


i've started calling wrecking yards and not many have older mopar stuff.

You can get a relatively inexpensive chinese made exhaust manifold from 1Aauto.com ($130? shipped). I had one for the last year with no problems, but just went to the Dutra duals. As far as the manifold with the open choke pocket, I think it is the 70-72? years. That is what I ended up with (NOS) to do the rear half of the Duals. Since I had to cut/weld a plate for the split process, I just welded a plate over the choke pocket.

I also got one of the exhaust/manifold gaskets from the Aussie guys at GPRS see this thread on the "hotbox" gaskets

They seal better and are great guys to deal with, no problems with international shipping.
