 Post subject: custom cam grinder

I am starting to look into a custom ground turbo cam, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions? Lots of good cam grinders out there, but is there anyone that knows slants?

In any turbo application, you want to use a slightly smaller cam than you would use normally aspirated and with slightly greater lobe seperation. Heat is what drives a turbo, not back pressure. In an ideal setup where the turbos would be mounted right off the exhaust ports, this cam recommendation holds true. As you move the turbos away from the ports, you loose the availability of heat and efficiency goes down. In this case, you start to drive the turbos less with heat and more with the pumping action of the engine. This is why you see 'crutch' cams with duration weighted more heavily towards the intake. This type of cam design was developed many years ago when turbo designs were largely inefficient. If you can mount the turbos close to the head, then you should be able to use a single pattern design as I described above.

Doug has a cam grinding shop that he uses and he has collected "profiles" on a bunch of cams. I expect he will add his 2 cents worth (now that I have goaded him!).

I *was* using Cal Cams in Oakland, CA for many years, then they went out of business : - (

Needless to say, I have not done much custom cam work lately.

Mitch I live near Portland,OR and thier is a cam grinder I have used before. They can grind anything from stock to really wild. They have turbo grinds also. Where you do live? I can find out how much the freight would be to your house.
