I've talked to a few people about using a carb spacer plate. I'm thinking of getting a 2 inch spacer machined up for my super six. Anyone ever done this to their engine or any suggestions on this?

I've wanted to make some for ThermoQuads for some time. Were I to do it, I would make them out of a hard plastic, phenolic, or bakelite. That way you would get the added benefit of isolating the carb from conducted heat.

I am seeing more and more of the SL6 racers putting 2 inch or more of spacer under the carbs.
I'm sure there is some power gain but hood clearance on a street car is an issue and automatic trans kickdown linkage would need some tweeking.

I've been Curious About carb spacer plates,Originaly for carb heat in cold weather situations.I had a F#&$ six that used one, hot water inline with the heater, open the heater valve and the carb gets alittle heat too. But my questions are about optimizeing performance when I build this thing.I've read one artical that a carb spacer on a V-8 (can't remember particulers) had a negetive effect when dyno tested. In reading your post Doc, I was glad to hear that allot are getting gains with spacers 2" or more. But I would sure like to know more like carb and manifold combos, construction: material, open plenium or 4 runners and carb mounting direction.Ive got a 78 d150 with power brakes, I'm running a Offy and a Holly 390. When I modifyed the super six air cleaner to fit the 4 barrel I made a aluminum "cone" this raised the air cleaner about 2" but I've got two more inches before it hits the hood, and I could move the air cleaner over 3" before it hits the brake cylinder, Has any one considered an offset spacer to get around clearance problems?. Thanks Bruce

Welcome to the "voo-doo" / black magic of getting even fuel distribution in a wet manifold system.
I can't tell you how many hours I have spent tring different things to get the best fuel mixture distribution on the repop Hyper-Pak manifold I did. The good news is that with time, (trial & error) and plug "reading" I was able to get it pretty close. The bad news is that if you change anything like carb type, size, oreantation (like adding a spacer) then all bets are off and you work at it some more.

With your truck and having lot's of room, I would give it a try, seems that an open spacer helps mix the air/fuel better before making the turn towards the runners. Let us know what you find-out during your testing.

: Thanks again,by the way, I like my new clutch (10" 2600lbs) Ott's of Portland put it together cheaper than a standard at a parts store! I'm going to buy some 3/8" flat and some 4" square tube aluminum tomorrow the first shot will be a spacer with 2"+/- rise And 3"=/- offset I'm going to rotate the carb 90 degrees with the secondarys outbound. going to weld a divider in the spacer between the primerys and secondarys (dual plain effect) this will make the primarys slightly longer, then I'm going to jack up the passenger side of the truck x # of feet and pour several ounce's of JB weld into the intake manifold, get it? to match the slope of the carb spacer. "voodo and black magic"? maybe, but I just can't understand why 90 degree turns are used for common induction, If I don't like it there's always side drafts. I dont expect to get as even distribution as with the repro hyperpak manifold ,the offy runners are so differant in length but I'll post what happens. Bruce

OOPS I ment to say "primarys outbound" secondarys will be closer to the engine.
