I was running my car last weekend down the track and at the top end heard a pop. Did a few checks at the track and checked compression and I had very little compression on #1 and #2 cylinders. I got back home took the head off and came to find I blew the head gasket between #1 and #2 cylinders. I talked to Jim Cox the other day and asked him about head gaskets and he mentioned an Aussie head gasket and to try and get a hold of Lou on this site. I am currently running a procharger on my engine with 8PSI boost, the engine is not o-ringed. I would like to know more about this aussie head gasket. I was wondering if Lou, could you email me at craig_o_connor88@hotmail.com and get some info from you. Also if anyone else could help or suggest a better head gasket to use possibly?

Lou would know how to get that head gasket. It is the one Camron Tilley runs and is good for about 16 lbs boost. I got one left but Lou should be able to put you on one. Thanks Ron Parker :D

The gasket is called "permaseal" and is from Oz. I think the best way to get one now is to go with one of the Ebay sellers of Aussie parts, like falconglobal or pentastar parts.

I got a bunch shipped through a friend of mine, but unless you can drum up some interest for a bunch of these, I don't think we are likely to do it again. I have done many group buys on this board and it is a lot of work, so I'm a bit burned out right now.

They are not necessarily best for boosted motors, but should hold yours. They work well up to 12:1 comp NA and have a large bore opening (3.66").

What gasket were you using?

The gasket that I am using is a fel-pro composition gasket. I was considering o-ringing the engine at the time it was built, but I was talked out of it and told I would be fine as long as I kept the boost low. With this setup I was considering going to possibly 10psi boost, but now I think I will reconsider

How are you monitoring mixture and what about ignition timing? Seems like people have run 10psi with a Felpro gasket before. How fast is the car now?

i have just been threw a tuff summer of blowing head gaskets( fel-pro), on my 11.4/1 comp engine that was all i used for years and never had a hint of trouble,i built a new lower comp engine 0.080 over bore with 4-71 blower and from the start kept blowing gaskets.the first was between #5&#6, then it started blowing the gasket in to the lifter valley. after 5 gaskets i tried a used steel gasket with mopar spray sealer/ adhesive and she held together for my fastest pass ever. i was talking to another b.b dodge racer who runs alot of n2o and he use the same spray on a copper gasket with no o-rings and he said it would probaly work for me. :o

I haven't had too much time to fine tune yet since I ran into a stripped oil pump gear early in the summer and just got the engine up and going again recently. All I am doing to monitor A/F mixture is plug reading and they are colouring well, probably just a touch rich. I'm highly considering a wideband O2 sensor, as far as timing I'm currently at 28 total. I have seen people running a boost retart box, anyone using one of these? or are they a waste of time. I have been running mid 13s, I still have a surge at the top end to work out yet and I'm having a little trouble hooking up at the start. I am leaning towards a different carb hat to see if it helps out with the surge. Has anyone tried the extreme velocity carb hat?

28 degs seems a little much, i tried 25degs and that was when i took the gasket out between #5&#6, but with the steel head gasket i never had the chance yet to try the timing above 15degs.i also hook up an O2 sensor to read the exhaust but didn`t know that i needed a wide band and mine was a narrow and the readings were way off, so don`t trust it unless you know it`s a wide ban sensor. i can`t do any more tuning here because racing is over but if your plugs look rich try keeping then reading a little on the rich side,just let the soot on the plug base stay a little heavy,i think it`s safer.

Speaking of the Metal Mopar shim gasket, do they still sell it? I would like to buy about three or four of them if I can find them. I am up to my third slant six car now & starting the build on my turbo setup so I better pick a few of these gaskets up. If you know where to get them or someone that has some please let me know.

well after seeing the head gasket had blown between #1 and #2, but it was going between #5 and #6 as well. I took a closer look at the cylinder head and noticed that the gasket ring for the bores sits about only half way on the head right where the valves were unshrouded. So the ring doesn't completly get compressed in these areas. Is this going to keep blowing head gaskets? I feel so or is this ok? If not will I have to track down an Aussie head gasket to fix this?

Yes, the head gasket is compromised because the fire ring support has been taken away. This is why you scribe the head gasket bore on the head before you cut the head! I would expect you'll blow more head gaskets if you don't use one with a larger bore or change gasket designs. What head gasket is that anyway? Also, those pictures are pretty small. I can see burned spots, but the detail of the fire ring on the head leaves much to be desired.

I'm using the E.V. carb hat and don't have eny problems with it. It's a quality piece. Drivability is good and I don't have any surge problems. I have mine positioned at a 45* angle off of the carb. With the angle and its size, I don't have to remove it to make jet changes.

looking at your pistons your getting detonation of the hot side of the cylinder by your ex valve,it`s probably the 28degs of timing your running under boost :?:
