I am trying to replace the oil pump on my 81 slant and I could not get it all of the way out. Do I have to lift the engine or is there a trick that I need to know?
I could get it out about two inches but could not get the rest out. I could not quite tell if I was hitting something with the gear or just hitting the crossmember.
I had the oil light come on and thought that the pump went bad. After I put the pump back in and started her up I did get oil in the filter.

Thanks,

It is often necessary to unbolt the right-side engine mount and use a floor jack with a large, sturdy piece of wood between it and the oil pan to lift up the right side of the engine, to get clearance to R&R the oil pump. But before you go to the trouble of changing the oil pump (too late?), you should check the (much) more likely causes of the oil light coming on. The oil pressure sender, which is screwed into the rear of the oil pump, can fail and cause the light to come on despite there being adequate oil pressure. It is easy and inexpensive to change. The wire from the sender to the oil light can get chafed and ground out somewhere along its length, which will also cause the light to illuminate. And the oil pressure regulator valve at the front of the oil pump can stick, bleeding off oil pressure and causing the light to come on. That's not a hard fix either, see information here, here, and here.

Thanks for the info.
I picked up a new sensor and will try to get that in tomorrow.
I replaced it not too long ago which is why I did not think that it would be that. I will also try to get to the relief valve and see if that is my problem if the sensor does not correct the issue (or while I am down there just do it then).
I really did not want to lift the engine but I will do what is needed to keep her running.

Thanks again,
