Hey guys,

I'm having a problem setting the dwell angle on my distributor. I have a 72 225 w/1bbl and points. I set the point gap to .020" and when I check the angle, its at like 80deg! So I tried opening the gap to get it down and the lowest I can get the angle is 60 degrees. The spec for my year 41-46 degrees. Is there something I'm missing or what?
Thanks in advance for all your help!

-Angelo

Whose points are you using? How are you attempting to set the point gap? Are you working with the distributor out of the engine, or still installed? Assuming new high-quality points, correctly installed and gapped on the true highest point of breaker cam, an inability to meet the point gap spec and the dwell spec at the same time suggests at least one excessively worn distributor component. However, the difference you're seeing is extreme and suggests an installation problem.

The points are made by Niehoff part# AL2HV(number on the box). I was setting the point gap using a feeler guage with the dtributor in and the rubbing block on the highest point of the distributor cam. Thanks !

Those points ought to be OK if they're not defective. You will find it much easier to get the points set correctly if you go ahead and remove the distributor.

What are you using to check the dwell? Sounds like you may have a dwell meter problem.

well.. i took another crack at getting the points set right and found out 3 things:

1. They were set correctly! ( ohh well...)
2. My dwell meter was taking a crap on me ( it would stay calibrated right)
3. My vacuum advance diaphram is busted!
Thanks for all the help you guys!!!

now I have a new post to make!

-Angelo
