Hey guys,

Got my car up and running (still need to fix a busted muffler) but after getting the car running and on the freeway, I got the timing, idle speed, and mixture pretty good.

The only question at the moment ts that the accelerator pump acts up a little, as i come to a complete stop, and i try to ease the car to accelerate lightly, the car is bout to die (like the accelerator pump doesn't put in any gas to get it going), BUT if i am at a complete stop and accelerate pretty good, the car just goes fine. so i wanted to ask if there was some adjustment to the accelerator pump i can do to get the car going off the line when i want to accelerate slowly (busted muffler remember!!:)

thanks for the help.

Forgot to mention, it is the holley carb that i got.

the original one barrel that came in the car, however i don't know if it's a 1920!!!

i guess i should have taken a picture, but as far i saw, the accelerator pump is up on the top part of the carb.

thanks

What year car and engine do you have?
Has this carb been rebuilt recently?
Is this a new motor that your breaking in?
Or has the car been sitting for awhile?
Bad gas, and or water will cause the same symptoms.

This is a shot in the dark not knowing all the facts......
You may be jetted a little lean, if when the accelerator pump kicks in it takes off.

I have taken all the slop out of my linkages by bending them slightly so they respond faster. I am running very lean so there is a slight lag in the transition from idle to just off idle. If I push the pedal down a little harder then the pump will squirt and I can feel difference of the extra fuel resulting in no lag. If I aggressively press the pedal down about half way, the tires will break loose.

When jetting richer, say a #59 or 60 there is no off idle lag when slowly accelerating.

I would check to see what jet is in it first. Then we can determine if the power valve needs to be adjusted. Be sure the screws are snug on top of the power valve. If not, they will cause vacuum leak and a lag and may even whistle at idle.

Does your carb look like this?

http://tinyurl.com/3bhkvb

It’s a shot in the dark but you could check to see if the clip is in your accelerator pump shaft. You can find some info on it starting about 6 posts down on this thread:

After fixing mine it idled and started better. I didn’t drive it before I took something else apart but I’d bet it accelerates better. (And it's an easy fix)

well, it definitely has the Holley cast on the front of it,

and let me tell you some more,
My bro had a friend that had a DUI and needed some money fast, so for 500 my bro got this valiant, the first thing my bro did, after he got the car is tow it to my house and said, get it running, so i had it for 3 weeks and know nothing of it before that, so
i did the whole tune up, (it wouldn't start cus timing was really off) so i fixed that, set the idle speed, mixture and timing to 10BTDC.
then i noticed the brake pedal would go to the floor when i pressed on the pedal, so a caliper, disks and pads later that's fixed too.
then i drove to the gas station to fill it up and noticed gas leaked too fast out of the gas tank (the hose from the tank to the metal line was ripped to shreads, SCARY), so i fixed that.
now, my drives around the block are careful, so that's the first thing i noticed from the drive.

anyways, It could have been sitting for years before i got it, I just dunno!!! and don't want to spend too much more money from what i already put in, i already put in $500 for a $500 car and still need to fix the muffler!!!

not complaining just giving you more info :)

thanks for the help

Well, by the clues you listed it sounds like a Holley 1920. I think what your seeing on the top of the float bowl toward the driver side of the car(where you said is says Holley) is the economizer, or power valve. The accelorator pump is inside the float bowl, behind the metering block. You can see the linkage on the passenger side of the carburetor. Throw a rebuild kit at it and see if that helps any. It will come with a new accelorator pump since its part of the gasket that goes between the metering block and carburetor body.
