hey,

i am interested in adapting what i think is an early 80's slant six engine to a chevy turbo 400 tranny. i was wondering if anyone had something like that for sale or if anyone knew where i could get one machined. thanx for your time! anything will be helpful.

Any particular reason for a TH400?

A TH400 is going to eat up alot of the power of a slant, and is overkill for the amount of power a slant produces.

Using a GM transmission instead of a Torqueflite is just as bad an idea now as it was the last time the topic came up.

Hello Triplex

If you want to think about the big Mopar tranny, I have one of Matt's beautiful slant six to A500 series trannies...was it A518? I don't have the number in my head just now. New, unused, and price at cost some years ago. PM me.

I remember reading (years ago) that the TF was one of the best transmissions ever made. When I took a class on trannys in the 80's, they used the TF to train us. Not only are they tough, they are still one of the cheapest to rebuild. I can't imagine swapping one for something else.

Why not putting a 4l60e or 700r4 behind a slant. I've lost all faith in the newer Dodge trannys. I repaired a A500 twice in my Mighty Max and now our minivan has taken a crap on us twice. Frankly I've got no problem with using GM parts which are cheaper on my slanter. So... if it could fit one of those trannies listed above would be a nice addition to any car.

'Cause you have to spend a lot money to get either of those transmissions up to the level of durability, reliability, and shift quality that you get with a bone-stock A904.

I agree with you, but you're mistaken if you think a stock 700R4 or 4L60E is any better than a stock A500.

I do agree with you about the 904 and 727 they are great trannies compared to the newer stuff as far as strength vs cost ratio.
However, like metioned before the A-500 was junk. I would bet some serious money on the Chevy's over the Dodges. I know, there are some people cringing, but like I said before I've had too many problems with Dodge's new stuff. First was the OD went out, than the torque converter broke and sheared a shaft, last was the junkyard. I don't mind fixing stuff if it's tired, but geez that truck had 60K on it. So this is personal opinion and Dan has his so we'll have to agree to disagree on them. Like I said if it does fit without major modifcation it could be a nice setip.

I rock TH400s and 4l60 everyday......in Chevs.

I cant think why anyone would go to the trouble to adapt one to a slant. Not cost effective.

The reason I use a TH400 is because I cant get an OD box to last in my tow/work vehicle. They are a great trans for that......but behind a slant?

Id put a Glide in before a 4l60....

I always laugh when the guys on Moparts have the argument about 727/Glide. For what it costs to build a Glide that won't break like a wet noodle AND adapt it into the car, you can build a 727 that won't break either.

As for the new stuff, GM has just as many issues if not more than Ma Mope. People have been telling me since I bought my R/T that towing in OD will kill the trans instantly. I've put 80,000 on the truck since I bought it 4 years ago, daily driven it, raced it, and towed my Valiant all over Christ's green Earth and every time I pull the pan (every 30,000 miles) it still looks brand new inside. It now has right at 120,000 on it and it still shifts like it did when I bought it. :D

A Glide has it's place in the world, and behind a Slant ain't it.

Its kinda like this....with only 2 gears you need one ton of convertor to launch a Glide.

It costs a lot of money to make one work.

For zero money I can have any number of TH400s that take no money to make them strong. The 2wd versions are a give away around here. I made an adapter for the 2wd version to bolt to a 208 tranfer case for just that reason.

727s are the same....no end of them for no money...and they dont break.

I like to have fancy $#!+ too.....but adapting a th400 to a slant is silly. What convertor would you even use?

If Im going to adapt something...I want a returm. ......like 5 gears and OD.

I agree, the old dodges are great. The only reason to adapt any of the trannies above is to have o/d. If it's a stick, I love my A-833od and will keep it behind the slant for some time. For an automatic I would look at the GM before the Mopar. I relise that Slantzilla has had good luck with his, but my family hasn't so in my book your the exception not the rule.
Anyways any auto od will be awesome and really improve driveability.

In my book YOU are the exception, not the rule.

I still would rather spend the money to make a Mopar trans fit than trying to adapt a GM trans which is not one buit better than a Mopar offering. :D

Oh yeah, Keisler is offering a kit to put the GM trans into a Mope. They debuted their kit on the Power Tour last year or the year before. It puked on the first leg.

There's the trick to make it last, be it Mopar, Ford or Chevy. Most problems happen because the fluid is never changes.

We went 225,000 on a Stratus without transmission problems, and that was after burning the fluid up the ski mountain when we first bought it. Swapped it twice in about 500 miles, did regular maintenance after that and it lasted the life of the car.

Not saying every problem is due to lack of maintenance, but I would be a bunch of the stories are from people that haven’t done any.
