i picked up a gas tank and a filler tube in the junkyar dfor my duster and well the tank was full of old gas and go trusted on the inside how would i get the rust out

Here is what I used to do on motorcycle tanks. Mix up about half of cup of Tide laundry detergent per gallon of water, use maybe 4 or 5 gallons in your case, hot water is better. Pour that in the tank with a few handfuls of CLEAN nuts and bolts. Now the rest of this will be tricky on a car tank. Find a way to seal the tank up and roll it around for a while. The nuts and bolts will knock the rust loose so it pours out with the soap. You may have to do it several times until you don't see rust in your soap when you pour it out. When you are done make sure you get all of the nuts and bolts out. When you're done, blow the tank dry. If the tank is going to sit for a while before it goes in the car, pour a quart of oil in it and roll it around to coat the inside then seal it up. If you find you are going to need to use tank sealer DO NOT use the oil trick.

One other OT tip, use the "preview" button before you post. I can remember how it is to be young and excited about your "new" car, being in a hurry get something done, but you need to read your work before you post. No offense, I remember being there too, though we didn't have the net back then. I want to see you succeed, so as long as my decoder ring understands your posts I'll try to help.

DusterTeen08, it would certainly help your cause of learning more about your car here on the forum if you would listen to what several people have mentioned and take the time to type your posts with better sentence structure so that they are easier to read and comprehend.

Sorry guy's I wrote that last night about almost near 12 O' CLock so yeah proablly a little messy on the grammer, But what would I need to use tank sealer on? where not even sure if the Sending Unit would be any good or not so if i had to pull that out and get a brand new one I suppose the sealer would be in need?, And as far as the tide and hot water and clean nuts and bolts go im alright on that ill keep it in mind tophat.

And yeah guy's I really love being here but on the mental note i have a little bit of a learning disabitly that sometimes grammer and things of english since are the best in my vocabular but I will try. :D

It's ok man, in person I talk like a backwoods redneck :)

Tank sealer is for if you find pinholes in the tank. Also known as tank coating. I described it somewhat in your junkyard post.

Pulling the sender unit is easy, and would only require a new "O" ring. I would pull the sender, hook an ohm meter to the single wire connection and ground the other lead to the body of the sender. Move the float up and down slowly and see if the meter responds in a somewhat linear fashion. You are looking for "dead spots" during the sweep. Also with the sender out you have a much bigger hole to reach in and get as much gunk as you can out. I would do the tank cleaning procedure I described above with the sender out, the nuts and bolts could damage the sender. I forgot to mention that before.

Hang in there. I still don't have a proper gas tank. I ran for almost 2 years with a plastic 6 gallon boat tank in the trunk. Now I have a 10 gallon aluminum dune buggy tank in the trunk. You do what you have to do to drive :wink:

my 40G gas tank has been sittin in the back for a few months now. its fun to go to the gas staion and roll down the back window and say"hey- put it there" oh im in oregon, we dont pump our own gas. cuz were retards i guess

DusterTeen, the most important thing is your passion for your goals! I do agree with the others-the better the post-the easier the help! Everyone makes mistakes in grammar and spelling! Even Doc, :bow: sometimes makes these kinds of mistakes! I was reluctant to list my occupation when I joined the forum. I am a teacher. I make these kinds of mistakes myself. My strengths are math and reading, not grammar and spelling. I still remember the horrors of diagraming sentences in high school. My project is very slow going so it is nice to see progress with similar dreams. Keep it up! You will get there! :D

That was cool Sandy. Fun reading. I just wouldn't want to have to do it all the time. :lol:

DusterTeen08, where in Georgia are you located? There are some pretty active Mopar clubs all around you that have shows, swap meets and monthly/weekly cruises and get-togethers. Have you checked out any local clubs/cruises yet?

The reason I mention it is that there are a lot of good people near you that would very likely "take you under their wing" so to speak and help you with some hands on experience. The internet is awesome, It brings people together that would never otherwise meet and you can learn a lot, but there is no comparison between hands-on and internet experience.

tophat's post about his cleaning method is a good example. It's a good post with good information, but the clarification about removing the sending unit first would not be needed in a "hands-on" scenario. (just using that as an example, not finding fault with the information at all)

When I was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas I joined the Southwest Mopar Club and one member named Roy took me under his wing and walked me through my first engine rebuild, transmission rebuild and paint job on my Dart. I had read all the mauals and magazine articles several times, but having someone experienced stand next to me and give me pointers as I went through the process was priceless! Roy is probably the exception rather than the norm, but there are some really great folks willing to help you out.

Keep posting your questions and keep us updated on your progress. We love seeing your enthusiasm and hearing of your progress! We also like trying to help where we can. I can type a sentence okay, but I'm no expert on anything mechanical. I haven't even worked on a Slant 6 car since the Valdosta race last year and I couldn't even get the timing set right! :shock: :oops: You can check out my "GodsRods Duster" saga here:

It was funny. When I read your post I had "flash backs" of when I "discovered" it myself! :lol: I think it was Charrlie that I went running to with my "discovery" and he set me straight. :D This Slant 6 Family is great, isn't it? Thanks for the kind words.
