Dan can I use the led third brake lamp light for a nite light in the back window of my race car. I need a light that I can turn on at nite when making a run at nite and turn off after the run is made. On maybe two minutes and turn off. Thanks Ron Parker

Ron, do I understand corectly that you are after a light that'll make your car more visible/conspicuous while you're making the run? If so, then yes, a LED third brake light would work (or two of 'em, one on each side). Or there might be better/less costly options, too. Are there any preferences or requirements for size/shape/light color/etc?

Our problem is not the run its self as the track is well lit. When we turn down the return road there are no lights there. A lot of the cars dont have headlights/tail lights. There in lies the problem.

Oh, OK, you need an illumination light (so you can see), not a conspicuity light (so others can see you). A brake light would be completely useless for the task you have in mind. Let's start from the start: Where and how do you intend to mount whatever light you wind up with?

Hum.... no we WANT to be seen. Me I have working tail lights but most cars dont. Most of the dedicated race cars have the headlights removed, so THEY need to see us. As LEDs draw next to no current and wieght is a big factor we were wondering about the 3rd brake light in the rear window option.
I think the worst case would be equivalent to 4 lane hwy. Just looking for a wide angle LED (viewing angle).

I'm still not clear on what you're trying to accomplish. Please spell it out for me clearly. Any light will let others see you, the question is how much illumination do you need to see where you are going?

When racing at nite, race tracks require that cars have a tail light adequate enough to be seen all the way to end of the track from the timing tower. They need to be able to see when the cars make one of the turns offs so they can send the next pair down.
Many drag only cars do not run an alternator, battery is charged between rounds, so they only use enough lite as possible to be seen and keep the current draw low.
Ron may be needing to know if a LED 3rd type brake lite will meet these requirements of low power draw and still be bright enough to be seen a 1/2 to 3/4 mile away.
Dan, you need to make a Slant Six Race or two to round out your slant six expertise!

OK, now I understand. Answer is yes, a good-quality LED center brake light will do the job nicely and draw very little power. If you want maximum safety, use two of them, one on the left and one on the right. The good ones cost money but don't fall apart and fail like the cheap junk. See here.

It has been quite awhile — a decade or so — since I was at a slant-6 race. Went to Clay City in 1998 as a spectator.

You may also want to consider a second (or a second stage in the one) for a brake light. Many of the boys do that for a bit more protection (from the idiot behind) both on the return road and in the lanes.

The ones I pointed at are brake lamp intensity, not the dimmer ordinary tail lamp intensity. It would be pretty easy to wire them up to operate as brake lamps and also have a "full on" bypass switch for the safety-light function when turning off the track.

I owe you an apology. Your second post covered the question nicely however, I mis read it. Then I went on to confuse the issue.
SO I APOLOGIZE.
Now on to another Question about the lights. Is there an LED short range spot or flood for 50' or less. Again wieght and power consumtion are big factors.

H'mm. This is so that others can see you when you're 50' away or less? Or you're trying to see 50' away from you by the light of this lamp you have in mind?

Looking for some forward facing light to see by on the dark back strech so if a car dies in front of me I can see it. We are suposed to run >25 on the return road if that helps.

That's not going to be cheap to achieve with an LED. You want a white light for that kind of job, and the only white LED units that'll put out a reasonably strong flood beam for seeing by are units like these. I haven't checked what they cost (I'm kind of afraid to). If you're on a tighter budget, put in two (or three or four) of this or this. The round one is probably going to come closer to doing what you want.
