well not gonna work the way I planned :x . It looks like the only way it will work is to run a belt all the way around. :shock: But I think its to much for one little v-belt dont u think?

My 1982 Dodge D 150 had manual steering when I got it--I installed power steering in it from a junked 1984 D100. Here is what I found:

1. The steering shaft (from the rag joint to power steering box) is shorter.

2. Use a Borgeson shaft, adjustable, bulletproof, collapsible , expensive (quality is never cheap).

3. You need a third pulley that bolts onto the front of the crankshaft damper/pulley.

4. The power steering belt will seem to be slightly misaligned. I thought this was just my truck, but I checked out three junked trucks and they looked the same--the pulley to pulley alignment seemed to be from 1/8" to 1/4" out of line. This doesn't seem to be a problem and likely could be fixed with the addition of some washers. I may have missed the presence of the washers on the junked truck--lots of funk in the dead truck (although the dead trucks still seemed misaligned).

5. Adjustment for the power steering pump seems pretty limited, I am thinking about getting a 1/4" shorter belt to help with that.

I wonder what others experiences are in replacing manual steering with power steering...

I found all that out the hard way but thats the only way I learn...if I even learn that is...lol...My only problem now is the belt setup. What do you mean about the third pulley on the crank? My power steering pump wants to run off the pulley at the very rear of the damper. But my problem is that groove is running my alternator and my fan. What am I missing???

The power steering is supposed to be driven off a pulley bolted to the front of the damper. Alternator and water pump are driven by the damper. AC is usually driven off a pulley bolted to the back of the damper.

Hey yall just got back from the pick n pull. Once again had alot of fun...until I poked my big fat head where I shouldn't have and came face to face with a few hundred wasp. Thats usually my luck had no business poking around in a van. :roll: I was able to grab my parts on the way out and ran off screaming like a lil school girl along with all the other people who was working around the area. I don't think I got stung but don't want to do that again. It was well worth it though! I got what I needed. I found a fresh truck that had a slanter. It was great cause it was setup just like it was supposed to be and even found the return line for the steering block. I don't know why my brackets are setting my pump that far back. I just took the whole set with me just case. Hope it works now.

ok well I finally figured out what i've been doing wrong. I don't know if anyone has figured this out but once again trial and error is the way I learn. Turns out even though the power steering pump off the 318 engine was the same part number it was actually set up a little different. The pumps are 100% the same on the V8's and slanter's. What they did to make them fit on the slanters was actually a good joke. All they did was flipped the pulley around. Now I can see why all the power steering pumps never line up perfectly with the front crank pulley. Well I hope this helps the newbies such as me in the future. Thanks for all the help guys I'm definitly going to make some donations to the 'SLANT SIX FORUM' in the future.

Finally finished it out yesterday evening. Ran a couple of quarts through the system and filled her up. I was surprised of how quick it purged the air out. I was told it could take a couple of hours of turning the wheel all the way left and right. As soon as I cranked her up she pressurized and almost instantly was fully operational. It works so well it drives better than my 99 chevy or dodge. Just have to fix the big mistake I did to the block and i'll be 100% ready to go!

JP, you gotta be nicer to yourself. Everyone struggles from time to time. We don;t want to lose a single slanter to destructive self criticsm. Just be patient and work through things. It sounds like you eventually get things worked out.

lol thanks I shouldn't have said it in that term because didn't really mean it that way. But I did feel really bad but yup in the end it came out ok. Just have to get that one problem fix but it should hold up until I figure out what to do. I'm thinking i'll take it to a friend of mine who has a machine shop and see if he can rethread it. Thanks for the concern i'll watch my mouth better... 8)

im glad my 87 d150 came with power steering i did hafta weld the power steering pump bracket back togethor when it cracked though

yeah at least I got an extra set of brackets. For now on i'm keeping every part I find :lol:. But it all worked out in the end havn't gotten it inspected or the insurance yet, still waiting to sell my dodge 250/350 (its a dually flatbed) diesel i'm gonna miss it. :cry: But once everything is stable here at home i'm gonna get this one finished inside and out then i'm gettin me a newer dodge diesel. Havn't decided if I want a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton. I'm looking at the 1 ton 4x4 but not quit sure yet.

Hehe, well man I sounded like a kid compared to now. After all those diesel classes I sure know a heck of alot more than I ever did, AND I'M LOVING IT! Well my dad had bought me this truck and starting resotring it but he passed away when I was starting on the power steering project. I only had enough courage to finish it off and that was the last thing I did. She's been parked for over a year. Now, I'm bringing her back to life and i'm ready to finish this project out top to bottom, inside and out. I just had one last question about the PS pressure hose. Is it supposed to be really long? I have to loop mine to make a big 180* from the pump to the gear. My problem is the hose is close to the headers and i'm worried that it might melt the hose. It was supposed to be a direct oem replacment but you never know with third party parts! I may end up going back to the junk yard and looking around to see what I can find. Thanks!
