I have a 1971 Dodge Dart Swinger with a 225 slant 6. It came with a Holley 1920 1bbl carb on it. I was thinking about putting a 2bbl carb on it. What all would I have to do the engine and what type of carb should I get for it?

So a 318 2 bbl carb would work as long as I would get an intake manifold that was made for a 2 bbl? Would I need to change my air cleaner as well?

What have you done to your car so far ? If its pure stock there might be other things you would be interested in doing first.

Adding a two barrel is a good upgrade for the slant, but the one barrel is not a bad setup depending on what your goals are, and what you have done already.

For instance upgrading the exhaust with 2 1/4 pipe and a better flowing muffler, recurving the distributor, and rejetting the one barrel carb can do a lot for very cheap. Even doing work to the head is a good upgrade with a one barrel.

The two barrel will work good even if pure stock but you will get more out of the other upgrades I meantioned and they will inhance the two barrel if you was to go there latter. If you take your time you can find a complete two barrel setup on a factory slant car that will have everything you need and make it easier and cheaper to do. But depending on your goals you may not need to go there.

read this -----> http://www.slantsix.org/articles/supersix/article.htm -- about 10 times, print it out and read it 10 more. a fsm and a haynes book also help with some of the torque spec's. be ready for things to go wrong, and good luck to you, welcome to the forum!

To do the 2bbl conversion correctly, you need the carb, air cleaner, and intake manifold. You'll be installing the (short) 2bbl throttle cable, unless you decide to modify a 1bbl intake to mount the 2bbl carb parallel to the engine instead of perpendicular, as described here (pdf) . That's certainly doable, but nontrivial (requires cutting and welding). Also, if your car has an automatic transmission and you _don't_ do the parallel-2bbl manifold mod, you will need either the complete 2bbl auto trans kickdown linkage setup or the arrangement described here. Occasionally you will find 2bbl carb-to-1bbl manifold "adaptors" for sale. These are a collossally dumb idea for about half a dozen different reasons, and they definitely don't constitute doing the conversion correctly.

Definitely read the article MiDi directs you to. It's not 100% error-free, but it contains a great deal of solid info on doing this swap. The easiest carburetor to use will be a 2bbl specifically intended for use on a slant-6. 273 and 318 V8 2bbls can be used as well, though choke linkage adaptation will be required and depending on the carburetor, you may also have to close-up the idle calibration holes in the throttle plates.

Do not buy a "rebuilt" or "remanufactured" carburetor — two different names for the same garbage; see this thread.

Lucky13 has some good advice for you; think about what you're trying to accomplish with this car and ask goal-centred questions to make sure you spend your money and time most effectively. It's entirely possible you'd be completely happy with a 1bbl that works correctly, if your present one does not. What does the car do (or not do) now that you wish it didn't/did?

Other things worth doing:

• a good tune-up with the best parts

• a good, careful valve adjustment

• an ignition upgrade to Mopar electronic or HEI

I've had the car since I was 16 (with only 15200 miles on it), drove it for a couple of years and it's been sitting in my dad's garage for about 12 years now (with just under 32000 miles on it now). I'm not looking to race it or anything like that. All I want to do (for now) is add a little more kick and torque to it, seeing as I will pretty much drive 1 day a week through the summer months. I bought a carb rebuild kit for the 1bbl and it didn't come with all the gaskets that I needed to rebuild it and theres a part that is clogged up and it doesn't run right. As soon as I hit the gas, the engine stalls out. I looked into pricing a new 1bbl carb and I can't really seem to find anything for a decent price if I could even find one at all.

New carb? Step into my office. Carb #3, 4, 5, or 6 would be ideal for your '71.
