I've got an aluminum bellhousing off a 3-spd van that has a 5.125" IBR hole. I just found someone locally via Moparts who's got two A833OD trannies but they both have the 4.8" IBR. Is the actual bolt pattern different between trannies with the different sized IBR retainers, or can I adapt the two together by having an adapter ring machined?

If yes, one of them is cast iron and the other is aluminum. Which tranny would be better for use in a mild daily driver?

Bolt pattern is the same on the 4-speeds regardless of the IBR diameter. I made a ring to adapt a close-ratio 4-speed to my OD bellhousing. Whichever tranny shifts better is the one I'd use.

I believe you can also get a bearing retainer from a late 3spd (A903?), which fits the 833 and has the 5.125" ring. Wildcat Mopar Wrecking I think had some of these. Mike Andreas tipped me off to this a few years back.

Either those 2 trannys are NOT ODs or someone swapped IBR's; I thought ALL 833 ODs had the 5-1/8 IBR.

I think 3 speed and 4 speed tranny bolt patterns are different, but at least some /6 bell housings had two sets of tranny holes.

Lakewood also sells the adapter ring.

So did I (according to the article on here). I didn't think it was possible to install a smaller IBR without also installing a smaller input bearing.

Can someone clarify this for us?

Also, whichever tranny I get, I plan to do a full rebuild so I know for a fact that it's good. I'm thinking that, given the limited power I'll have going through it from the slant, perhaps the aluminum would be a good way to go?

I would check out Brewers' Performance too,
http://www.brewersperformance.com/

as they can get you a bunch of oddball Parts to make manual (833)'s work.

If either one of the 4 speeds in question has the 4.16 retainer bolt pattern for the 308 bearing, Passon Performance lists the 5.12 diameter ones in their online catalog for 75.00.

Anyone checked on recent availability from mother Mopar? Although they don't list the 5.12 ones, they've started carrying a variety of retainers in the Mopar Performance catalog for 833s again, so it might be worth checking on the 5.12 diameter ones to see if they are also currently available through regular parts channels.
