I've got 2 14x7 deep dish aluminum slots with brand new 225/70/R14's on the back of my 1978 volare, and 2 15x6? (I think) aluminum slots that I'm putting 215/70/R15's on, that I had laying around... this will be temporary until I find 2 more 14's for the front, but is this something I shouldn't be doing or will it be fine?

If the outside diameter of the mounted tire is about the same it should be ok. Might look a little funny though.

if the front tires are larger in diameter than the rear this will negatively affect braking bias. your rear wheels will lock up before the front, putting you in a tailspin during panic braking. My vote is no, don't do it.

I suppose a good question to ask is.. How temporary is temporary? Also, is this something that you drive everyday?

It WILL negatively affect your braking bias as SOMB says, and this is a dangerous thing to be playing with. The same as having weak front brakes and new rear brakes...

If you have something that is the same size or smaller that you can stick on there that is safe, I would do that instead. I've had this one bite me before on my '65 Chevy pickup... and I won't make that mistake again... believe me.... it was not fun.

It will work, but I would not advise driving far or fast with it like that... I ran my '71 Dart with fat 14" slot rims and tires in the back and skinny 13" steelies up front... it didn't look too wierd... Just watch out for those corners, skinny tires tend to slide easily...

I ran the numbers on my tire size calculator program and your rear tires should be 26.4" tall and the fronts should be 26.85"tall. I have roughly the same thing going on on my Dart right now. I have 205/65/15 on the front and 215/60/15 on the rear. I my fronts are 0.34" taller then the rears, your fronts will be 0.45" taller. I can tell you that on DRY pavement this will SEEM to work ok as it did for me for the last 2 months or so. The first good real hard rain, driving to work the rears want to lock up under even moderate pressure. I got to work ok and got a chance to get the car on the lift and all the brakes checked out ok, with no problems. I took it out back and did a hard "panic" stop from 40mph, the car spun one and a half times. I started thinking about what I had changed, and the front tires were the only thing I had changed. Bigger front tires will also very likely have a negative effect on your alignment. The big front tires are really NOT SAFE and should be avoided if possible.

BTW I do happen to have 2 pairs of aluminum 5 slot wheels. First pair is 14x8 I think, unilug that will fit 5x4.5 bolt pattern. The second pair is 14x4.5 I think, these wheels have a chevy bolt pattern, but could be redrilled as there is plenty of meat. As soon as I can get some pic's I will post these in the for sale section. Feel free to pm me about them.

Doing something unsafe temporarily doesn't make it any safer, and doesn't make it okay. Unless it's truly an emergency situation — stranded far from home in good weather and the only way to get home is to fit mismatched front/rear wheels as described — then no, I really don't think this is okay to do, even "temporarily".

I could be wrong, but, If the tire dia is only about a 1/2 inch difference in hight, I don't really see a problem. I have seen a bigger difference then that in the same size tire, from the same manufacturer, in a different "name".

Just sell your car and buy a nice safe Honda Civic so all the hand wringers can sleep soundly tonight.

I've driven many thousands of miles with different size tires on either end of the cars I own. I have never had any adverse affects.

I can't tell you how many hand wringers I've had chastise me for running 15X3.5 Weld Wheels on the street.

I ran some tall 70 series tires on the front of my Duster with some short 60 series on the back trying to get some gear ratio in it w/o changing rear ends. It looked stupid, but it did not cause any wrecks, natural disasters, or kill any puppies.
