I am new to this whole slant sick thing and i was wondering what it would take to put a 4 bbl carb on my truck. I was thinking of putting a 360 or a 383 in it. But now i realize it would be awesome to have a slant six that will run faster than these corvettes. So i guess what im asking is how much time, were are the parts available at, and what i would need to make it have more power for a daily driver. I might drive it in the winter but thats what my ford is for. Also can anyone post a vacuum diagram for these trucks. I swapped it to conventional ignition back in 05 and it has a bad miss at idle and when you first start it for the day. The carb i replaced with a Holley 1945 and its rebuilt. But i don't know if i have the engine timed right because when i did time it i had it right on and it seemed to miss very bad. So i backed it off until it ran better and its been like that since. :?: So any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome.

(1) I don;t want to rain on your parade, but you will never be able to build a slant six (especially in a truck) that will outrun a corvette.

(2) That being said, there is lots you can do to improve the MPG and performance of your motor.

Thee first thing you should do is get the engine combination you have now running good. You don't say what year truck you have, but you mentioned you converted to conventional ignition. I am assuming, based on your screen name, that you have a 1981 Dodge truck. Therefore, I assume you mean you removed a computer controlled ignition and installed a standard electronic ignition.

I would begine by doing a basic tune-up. New cap rotor and plugs, adjust the valves (unless your truck still has the original hydraulic lifter motor). Then I would install a vacuum guage and see where your vacuum is at during idle and driving. I would also check for timing chain stretch and vibration dampener slip.

What distributor did you use to get rid of the computer controlled ignition? If you installed a distributor with the wrong ignition advance curve or a distributor that needs work internally your performance and fuel economy will suffer.

Who rebuilt the carb? Have you made sure that it is adjusted correctly?

Have you checked that the vacuum advance pod on the distributor holds a vacuum? How about the choke pulloff diaphragm on the carb?

Before you go throwing parts at the engine, you should really get what you have running well to make sure you are not ignoring a problem. You can use the search function on this website to get answers to all of your questions, as well as advice on the best parts to use in your motor and where to get them.

I did adjust the timing this morning but it still has a slight miss t idle so i guess i will have to try to find the problem but thanks for replying to my message.

is it a steady miss or a stumble?

you could have a bad valve, bad plug wires, carbon tracking in your dist cap, if the miss is steady.

if it's a stumble or a rough idle, your reman carb could be a dud. more often than not, they are.
