I ran a search on this but couldn't find anything. The air filter is saturated with oil. I just bought this car and I'm working on it for the first time. What would cause oil to get up in the air cleaner? (I'm assuming it's oil. It smells like gasoline, but I know I have gasoline in my oil due to a ruptured fuel pump which is being replaced. It's dark amber and viscous and coats the bottom of the air cleaner.)

Is this a sign that my slant needs to be rebuilt?

Can anyone corroborate that GM PCV valves are better than Mopar for slowing oil that is getting into the air cleaner?

And Rislone makes a number of products, which one would I use?

Oil on the air cleaner is usually a sign of one of two things:

(1) a malfunctioning PCV system allowing the crankcase to pressurize and spray oil through the breather into the air filter housing, or

(2) a worn motor with excessive blowby.

I would first try replacing the PCV valve with a good one before worrying about your rings though.

The oil usually comes from the air breather hose that's from the valve cover to the outside of the air cleaner...........

Check for a clogged up PCV (other hose from valve cover)

Should I replace the air breather also? Any recommendations as to brand for the PCV?

The "install a GM PCV valve" suggestion has no basis in fact; use the correct PCV valve for the application. Good brands are Standard, Purolator, Echlin, and AC. Don't assume you need a rebuild yet, you may just need to put the crankcase ventillation (PCV) system back in working order. Pull the PCV valve out of the valve cover with the engine idling. Put your finger over the end of it -- is there strong suction there? If not, the PCV valve and/or passage in the carburetor is clogged or blocked, and/or the PCV hose is cracked or not hooked up correctly. Carburetor operation and repair manuals showing which carb port is for what are posted here for free download. Make sure the PCV valve grommet is in good condition. Do replace the breather; good brands are Purolator, AC, and Wix (#42997, NAPA #2997). Use new emissions-rated hose (not heater hose) to connect the breather to the air cleaner, and you can use a length of 3/8" fuel line hose to connect the new PCV valve to the carburetor.

As for cleaning the engine internally, use soup.
