Napa lists two options:

(1) PGB PBR7 $14.99 Product Line: Proformer Bearings
(2) BRG BR7 $44.99 Product Line: NAPA Bearings

Why the $35 difference? Will it matter in a daily driver? Do I have to replace both at the same time? I know I need one. :shrug:

I'd buy a good bearing. Shop around a bit and you may be able to better $45 each. The BCA/National A7 is $32.79 from Rock Auto, but it's too late to get those for Sunday. Don't limit yourself to auto parts places. Industrial bearing suppliers may carry them as well.

If you need a new bearing get one localy and get it put on today or tomorrow. You'll have to go to a machine shop and have it pressed off and on. Mine are CR's, made in goood ol' China, and have held up for over a year (5-6 days a week of 80+ mile commuting).

Okay, I just got back from driving from one end of Tacoma to the other, and I have to make one more trip out to pick up the axles with the new bearings.

First I went to McGuire Bearings with the axles but they couldn't tell me what size the bearings were unless the bearings were off the shafts. They sent to one machine shop which is closed until March 2. I then drove out to another machine shop on the other end of town, but they don't do axle bearings. The second machine shop sent me to a THIRD machine shop who had the bearings off in about 20 minutes. i then went back across town to McGuire's to get the bearings, then BACK across town to the third machine shop to drop the axles off, but the machinist was at lunch so I have to go BACK again. Argh.

If anyone else is interested, for a 1969 8 3/4 axle, the part numbers for the bearings and races are M201047 and M201011.

I just about choked on the price. Total for two bearings and two races was $132.72, cost to press off the bearings was $20, and I am assuming that it will be that much again to get them pressed back on. Good grief. To top it off the bearinsg and races aren't even made in the USA, they are Japanese. But at least it will all be done today.

Now I have to go fight with the u-bolts and hope and pray that I can get the nuts off without breaking a u-bolt. This car is going to bankrupt me...

Oh man. I'm sorry if I steered you in the wrong direction, but I thought you would call and see if an industrial bearing house actually was cheaper. Suddenly $90 at Napa for the better bearings doesn't seem so bad.

Also, the bearing set from Napa contains the retaining collar you need to replace when the bearings are R&R'd.

No worries. Before I went tearing all over creation, I called the Napa in town that USED to have an in-house machine shop. Turns out (a) even though they still have the big "MACHINE SHOP" sign out front, they actually don't have a machine shop anymore, and (b) they didn't have the bearings in stock anyway. :roll:

I wonder about the quality of the bearings if $90 at Napa got me the bearings, races, and spacers, but $130 at McGuire's only got me the bearings and races. Some corner is being cut somewhere, or McGuire's is a bunch of crooks...

Its my fault for waiting this long to get on top of this. If I didn't have to work for a living I would have plenty of time to play with cars... :wink: :roll:

I guess I will try and get away with re-using the old retaining collar. :|

The bearing retainers have to be pressed on.....or heated in an oven to slide on the axle shaft.

Well, I was wrong. It was another $50 to get the new bearings and old retainers pressed on because they replaced the seals that go under the bearings for me without asking. So I guess that is good?

So for a grand total of $230, I got new bearings pressed onto my axles today. :shock: All I have to say is that this axle had better survive a nuclear blast.

Thats a good thing Reed. I believe the outer seals get damaged when the bearings are removed anyway.

Okay. Its just this expense came as something of a shock. I was expecting $90 for bearings, tops, and then maybe $30 to get them installed.

Its done now, and I guess it needed it anyway, but what an expensive lesson...

I did it twice in one year...once to fix a leaking outer seal, and agian to fix a poorly installed (by me) inner seal that washed all the grease off the bearing and fried them. Don't remember mine costing that much though...Oh yeah, you got the inner seals, right? I'll bring my 4X4 bearing socket down and pound the new ones in for you.

Yep, I got all new seals. This axle will have complete new seals everywhere and new wheel bearings. I am trying to do as much as I can with the axle out.

That price shows why even a 20 ton shop press from Harbor Freight at @$139 is a useful tool. You can do many things with one, too. I use it to shape stainless panels, for instance.And you can sell the press for $100 n a Craigslist.

But I suggest sumpin else...After seeing I could never u\get my U-bolts off by hand, and seeing how rusty they were, I just cut em off with a 4 inch grinder and a metal cutting wheel, in minutes. I ordered new ones from Espo, got em in a few days, and no problems.Primed em, painted em at same time as priming and painting the housing. All looks very neat. I also went ahead and put all new brake parts in for abou8t $60 more for the rear.
