Really? Thanks Dan! I didn't know that. I do remember the choke on my 64 Signet I used to own was the standard bi-metallic spring/choke diaphragm setup I described. Huh, learn something every day.

See this thread, and you can also see the pull-off piston housing on the external view of the 1963-only Stromberg W carburetor (2nd picture, "choke piston housing").

If all that checks out, the carb gets/is adjusted correctly, and there are no vacuum leaks, there is a definite possibility of a slack/incorrectly installed timing chain. The symptoms may or may not be present that are indicative of anything in particular, since the car isn't driven ATM. I had this very same issue on my '71, and that thing would fry tires! :shock:

I replaced the chain, and started pulling 22" hg @ idle instead of 10". Other than the low vacuum and poor mileage, that car actually ran pretty well. Suddenly my mileage went from 10 in town to 18... hmm... :D
