New to the forum nd to the 225s. Ive heard alot of good about them but this one is not too good. My question is do i need the electronic fuel control thing or can i override it? Its a 4spd, 165k but runs excellent for 5 mins. Maybe timing or may need a carb?

Welcome on the board. How much experience do you have working on cars of this general era? The first thing to do, right away, is to get these three books.

Oh i have alot of experience with cars, generally the post 90's with all the technology. Ive just started with the carb'd stuff and i like it more and more. I did the timing, used carb cleaner in the carb and it still dies after like 10 mins of running. Cut the cat off and still nothing. Any ideas??

make sure you arent running out of fuel. Check all of your fuel lines.. generally rubber lines that are bad will have cracks and be a vacuum leak. Replace any lines that are cracked. Also, when it dies, verify that you have spark. Grab an extra spark plug and pull one of your spark plug cables off and roll your engine over holding the plug near a good source of metal. Make sure all of you vacuum lines are not cracked too and replace if you find any that are. Also a good way to tell if its a fuel problem is when it dies and if it wont start up again, grab a can of starting fluid and give the carb a little squirt and see if it starts up. I had a really bad problem with my 87 d150 stalling and it ended up being my fuel sending unit was rusted through (fuel problem). Check all of these things and let us know.

if you mean the ECM then yes, you can override it by converting your ignition system to electronic ignition. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15779. You will need a distributer with vacuum advance and a ignition module to do this mod, but its supposed to be a lot better than the lean burn ECM thats installed. I haven't done this mod yet, but I am planning on doing it soon.

make sure your not loosing spark. Check the resistance on the coil and out of the distributer.
