1967 Dart has 1976-77 A-904, 68 block. Do I need a balanced or unbalanced torque converter?

All slants are internally balanced.

Will a TCI 141300 "Brakeaway" torque converter work. Stall 2200 to 2500 depending on engine torque output? Nice chart here. I have 9.5 compression, cam upgrade, and 3.55 rear.

My guess is these are all designed for V8 applications.

I just installed a PTC converter that was rated at 2800-3000 stall with a small block that stalled at 2400 with my mild cammed S/6.Don,t get me wrong,I,m not saying anything bad about PTC,It,s just 6cl engines have less torque than a V-8 and stall at a lower RPM.Let us know how hot of cam your running, then we can give you a recommendation.I,m afraid one with a 2500 stall rating with a V-8 will be so close to a 2000 stall stock S/6 converter that it will be a waste of your time and money.

Not worth using. You want something efficient that is rated about 3000 RPM behind a small block. I need to get the drivetrain in the RX-7 so I can check the stall of my 9.5" PTC torque converter.

I understand that lower torque output from a 6 results in a lower stall speed, however, how dose one determine efficiency between all the different brands of converters?

Build:
1.70" & 1.44" valves, ported, 9.5 cr, unknown cam with .438" lift, Holley 390, Clifford intake & headers, duel exhaust, EI, and 3.55 rear end. Idles at 1000 rpm out of gear

The next question is; what would ball park hp. & torque out put of my slant be?

It's going to be very difficult to find efficiency numbers for aftermarket torque converters. One thing is generally true. To maintain, or at least not drastically lose, efficiency the torque converter generally needs to be smaller as the stall speed is increased. If your engine will not idle smoothly below 1000 RPM I'd be looking at 9.5" and 10" torque converters.

HP? What's your 1/4 or 1/8 mile MPH?

http://www.fticonverters.com/ is what I recommend.

I tried Spec converter and Midwest and I have found the FTI converter to be not only better built but performed better at the track and on the street.
FTI converter

Spec (blue) and Midwest (blcak) converter

Very little can be determined about a converter just by looking at it, but one can see the difference between the FTI and the other two.

Well there lies the conundrum.

With the present trans & torque converter configuration I couldn't possibly perform an optimal timed run. With the head work, and carburetor straightened out this car pulls real hard over 3200 rpm. at half throttle. Rowing up through the gears under full power is not pleasant as she pounds into second unless fully off the throttle. 2-3 can be performed with the right foot planted on the floor resulting in a nice positive firm shift with no drive train abuse. Because of this I have never taken the car down the strip.

I was hoping someone with a like build that has dynoed, or raced their car could toss out a few numbers. I know stock output is 145hp & 215lb. ft. @ 2400 rpm.

Bren67Cuda904 your engine build is close to mine, perhaps a bit more robust, do you know your output numbers?

Its hard to really say anymore. I've changed so many thing since it was engine dyno tested. 235HP 300ftlb and ran something around 15.8 @ 85.01 mph in the 1/4. Made some changes and had ran a best of 14.74 @89.81 mph. If I where you I wouldn't base anything off what I have done.

Bren67Cuda904,

I called your FTI guy. He is talking SR series 26-2700 stall for $480 + shipping... A wee bit more than I want to spend on that device.

Your engine numbers are impressive 230 hp & 300 ft lb is about what the Commando 273 V8 makes in factory trim.
