I recently (yesterday) replaced the 19" rad in my dart with a 22" rad from a 1980 Aspen wagon. It's meant to have a coolant recovery tank attached (I have the tank), but I have nowhere to mount it. I've noticed I'm getting a small puddle of coolant on the ground after shutdown (through the overflow tube. No leaks). I wonder if this is because the cap is meant for use with the recovery tank? Is there a cap I can use in it's place that will prevent this overflow? Or, better still, can anyone think of a recovery tank I could use that'd fit between the rad support and the front grille? I'd have to move the horns to mount it on the engine side of the rad support and I don't want to.

It's not the cap........

The older radiators without the recovery bottle had a huge top tank that you didn't fill to the top.

When the water expanded due to heat, it expanded into the top tank.

With the newer radiators, the expansion is into the recovery/overflow bottle.


Eventually the overflow will quit if you don't top up the radiator.........

Find an overflow tank that will fit somewhere and install it.

Is there a reason the tank won't fit, the 1967+ bathtub has plenty of room...I know on my '67 the 2nd horn is mounted where the overflow bottle would bolt up...

The upchuck will stop happening once the coolant volume is no longer excessive. Filling the radiator right up to the filler neck ring when cold means there's nowhere for the fluid to go once it's hot — except onto the ground. If you don't want to add a tank — universal add-on tanks are readily available — then let the fluid find its level and don't add coolant just because the level is an inch or so below the filler neck ring when cold.

A radiator cap meant for use with a recovery tank can be used without such a tank; there'll be no adverse effect. A recovery tank will not function if the radiator cap is meant for use without a tank.

The new rad takes up a lot more room. I'd have to relocate either the horns or the battery to fit the bottle on the engine side of the rad support. I'd rather just get a smaller recovery bottle and mount it on the grille side of the rad support.

That's what we needed to know...post 1972 the horn is mounted under the battery holder to make room for the puke bottle... make sure the top of the bottle is even with the water level when the core is full....if it's lower it'll siphon the water out at the most opertune moment...
