I am prepping for when my remflex gaskets arrive, and while I was cleaning up the head part ,I notice that the first exhaust valve at the front was oily some around the bottom, and the others were whiteish. Is this something wrong (burnt valve) , or could be something wrong in the future . Is there anything I can try to fix it or help it. I can't really check the compression until I get everything back together. If the compression is good , should it be ok?
I had to edit my post because I know nothing about valves and screwed it up :D

Thanks for your replies
Dave

It may be that the front is running a little colder since the fan blows on it constantly.

1. What did the spark plug look like compared to the others?

2. Could the lash have been set a little tighter on that valve?

3. Does the rubber valve seal look good or is it hard and cracked?

Mine looked like that however, with the electric fan and carb heat deflector it runs hotter and stays a nice light beige/tan color.

How's the valve guide? Oil on the valve is the main symptom of a loose guide.

My truck has hydraulic lifters , so I think you don't adjust them .
With the valve seal and valve guides , I am taking it ,that I check that with the valve cover off, right.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Yes, you need to pull the valve cover and do a physical inspection.
Might as well get a new gasket and give the valve cover a coat of paint.

Thanks Ted,
I put on a new cover gasket a few months ago (rubber gasket)and have not run it too long at one time( not driven it) Would that one still be ok?
I was thinking about the painting it, maybe I will mail it to MiDi

I have reused the rubber one many times adjusting the valves. Take a look at the pictures of it on the link below. I glued it to valve cover with E6000 and it stays put and doesn't leak.

I took the valve cover off ,but I have no clue.
Is the valve guide the metal bushing around the valve stem, and if it is ,is it suppose to turn any? Where are the valve seal ,is it the rubber (i guess) cover over the valve guide? If that is the valve seal, are they suppose to be on top off the guide, some of mine were ,some of them were at the top of the valve stem. I am ignorant on this subject, any pics , or instructions would be great

Thanks
Dave

Yes, it is usually a bronze/brass color where as the head casting is gray. It is not suppose to turn because it is pressed into the head. The rubber boots fit over the guide and head casting. If they are hanging up, you may want to borrow a spring compressor and replace them while the head is off. Then you can check each valve to see if any are burnt, clean them up and re-lap them for a good seal. The rubber valve guide boots are cheap!

Take a close look at the good Doctors "Buster" pictures or some of the other photos of his engine builds. Some good shots on the front page "articles" section.

So you think I need to remove the head? How hard is that to do ? how much do I need to do to the head,or just check it out.

Is there anything I can try with the head on for right now , how much can I take off with the head on that might help. I am not doubting your knowledge , just not ready for a job like that right now, I think .

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

If you don't pull the head.........you can use a the old rope trick down the spark plug hole, with the piston up, then use the spring compressor, or air pressure into the spark plug hole to hold the valve up.

Or you leave it alone. You never did say how the plug was burning in the # one cylinder?

How does the plug look? Especially compared to the others.......
It could be just running rich on #1.

What brand plug and heat range were you running?

How many miles on the engine?

Like Ted says "Pull That Plug". tell us what the number 1 and 2 plugs look like. Maybe post pictures if you know how. I would just run it if you wernt having any problems with the engine. Or if you dont feel comfortable trying to fix it right now.

By your original post I thought the head was already off. If it's not fouling plugs I wouldn't worry aboot it.

Sorry for the missunderstanding :? . I was stating that I was cleaning the head side up some for the exhaust / intake gasket when I glanced in the port . I had recently changed the plugs about 6months ago. I checked the 1st and 2nd plugs and they were black not oily or cruddy just black , I also checked number 6 and it looked the same. I will try to take a picture of them soon, I will be playing catch up at work this week because of the holiday.I will also try to take a pic of the valve through the port if I can. Thanks for your help , and sorry about the missunderstanding.
I had the NGK UR4 plugs in them and it has 79,000 miles .
I have not drove the truck with these plugs in it ,just running it .
Oh yeah , my second remflex gasket set came today , and of course , the idiots screwed up this one also.It looks like when they were pushing it in the box ,their thumb slipped and mushed the end part of the gasket
Thanks
Dave
