I have a balancer with good rubber, and had someone weld a crack along the keyway. I painstakingly ground away the excess weld, and even took maybe .010 exra off above the keyway, so the repair sleeve could slide on without hanging up. It went on very well, but it seems that there is a very slight indent in the sleeve, as if the area where I ground off some of the balancer does not support the sleeve, and the sleeve kind of drops a little. I'm guessing less than .01 of a drop. On the other hand, maybe what I percieve as a drop is due to a very slight high area that I did not grind off, but I checked for high areas by rotating the balancer while hoding a steadied marker against allof the area where the sleeve covers

The front seal seems pretty tight as I slide it on, but I am concerned that
at 1000 rpm, I might get leakage.
Anybodys thoughts on whether to go ahead with this one, or try to spend more time and money finding a balancer with still good rubber?

get a new or good used balancer, it may seem alright now but at 3000 or 4000 rpm while passing on the highway and it comes apart it could be a mess.

New balancers are easily and inexpensively available; cheap insurance against hassle and leaks to just go ahead and install a new one.

Yikes! I would never ever weld a damper hub unless it was life or death. Get a new Powerbond damper, have an uncracked original damper rebuilt by Damper Dudes, find an NOS damper, or even a good used damper. Yours is not just junk, but dangerous junk.

OK, but for us that don't get it, why is welding on a hub so risky?
The weld metal and hub metal seemed to blend together well.
Along those lines, how many people are driving slant sixes around with cracked keyways? How many of you have taken of a balancer to find a cracked key way, and wondered how long this balancer held on?
ANother way of looking at it, have any of you had a balancer come off due to a metal failure, esp at the keyway?

Trying to learn.

I guess my perspective is that it doesn't make sense to me to keep running a welded up component that requires precise balance.

Especially not when that part is relatively cheap and easy to remove/install.

the point is, if you don`t know it`s cracked you don`t worry about it, but when you find it then you start to think of what could have happened if it had failed. use the repaired balancer if your stuck but for piece of mind change it.
