There are tons of threads about different combos and what's needed to get so much HP or torque, but what I couldn't find is anything that even hints at how quick a streetable slant powered car could go. I'm talking good street manners, acceptable economy and excellent reliability in a car with a full interior and at least minimum create comforts.

My last A-body was a 340 Duster. That car ran high 12's typically, ran a best of 12.27 and on the bottle went mid to low 11's. With 3.23's or sometimes 3.55 you could drive it anywhere, which I often did. It got 16 MPG, had a full interior, radio, heat, wipers, etc, handled well and was fun to drive. If I applied that same level of detail to a slant six powered ride, what could I hope to get out of it?

Probably disapointment after having an 11 sec 340. I think most of us build these motors because they are just different. I don't know anyone who has dumped a fortune into a slant in a 4dr. But i'm doing it because it's NOT a v8.

I got to drive Lou Madsons (Dart270) road race car in Bristol a year and a half ago. Now granted it wouldn't be street legal here in PA but it was very streetable and it runs in the 14's. It dosent have a full interior and the speedo didnt work at the time.
I had my 70 Valiant 4 door in the low 16's with out installing a performance cam. I ran a full interior everything worked. I got 18 around town and 21mpg highway.
Get yourself an early A-body and show us what you can do! Build up a motor, spend what ever you spent on your 340 and let us know what kind of times you run.

My Valiant is very well mannered on the street, and is my daily driver. It has run mid 15's in the 1/4 with a bit of wheel spin, has the mph to run a low 15. Maybe with some shorter gears and some sticky rubber it might run a high 14.........that's what I like to think anyway.

However, short gears may not be classed as "streetable" by some.

I had my Valiant at a swap meet recently (I don't go to car shows but do attend swap meets because most of the attendees are real car guys) and was using the Valiants trunk lid (with a blanket over it) as my display table and I had more guys stopping and commenting on the little slant motor than I ever had with my other cars.

I haven't been a slant owner for very long but I'm pretty sure that you can spend a small fortune on a slant and not get the same performance return for the money as you would on...say... a small block Chevy...but that's not really the point.

My built street motor,200 rwhp in my 62 valiant race car went 13.00.Add 1,000lbs of creature comforts,exhaust system,dot tires and street gears,and you have a high 14,low 15 second car.My car now only weighs 2400lbs with me in it and is real close to 300 rwhp,has run in the 11s ALL MOTOR.Not even close to beeing streetable anymore.Guzzi Mark

I think the key to having a decently fast slant and daily driver is an overdrive transmission of some sort. Ryan's 72 Dart has decent street manners, has run 14.8's and weighs 3170 with, full interior...etc. 4:30 gears and slicks get you down the track, and the OD transmission lets you drive down the road at 60 MPH without too much trouble.

There will be no disappointments, I'm just curious what you could get out of one without a power adder. It would be a fun driver if it accelerated like a 14-second car. It's good to know that's been done without making it too high-strung. While I had planned to turbocharge it I'm really digging that dual single barrel set up; it looks so much cooler.

I drive my 14.5 sec '64 Dart from coast to coast occasionally, and everywhere else. 22-25 MPG hwy. It is light, but could be lighter. Engine is powerful, but could go further with my current knowledge (13s, by golly). Seymour's white '62 Valiant has run 13.90s in street trim driving all over this nation. Fun is in the eye of the beholder.
