Stock BBS filter for a 64 is (Wix 42011)

8" OD
6.5" ID
3" tall.

Air filter sheet metal looks like yours, but without the breather hose.
Looks like the hose was added on yours.

If you have room, you could always mount the taller filter.

I see a notch for the breather hose in the top sheet metal.

It looks like the top is lower than normal due to the shorter filter.....

Looks to me like someone may have added "something" extra, where the bottom pan sits on the carb, that may account for the washer stack where that hose is connected. The "dome" on the base pan looks just about like the one on my "68 Dart, and my filter is a Fram CA146, that measures out at 8"OD, 6.5"ID and 2 7/8" tall, after being installed for a while. I have about 1/2" of stud to put the wing nut on. Holly 1920.

I just double checked, my "breather" hose, the one that runs to the valve cover, is attached to the lid part, not the base.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it. I did try a Purolator filter that was 3" tall but the cover just wouldn't go on...may have to give it another shot and see what I can do. So obviously the notch in the top doesn't necessarily have to go over the breather tube, it's there "just in case" kind of? I am tempted to scrape all that RTV off and figure out what the deal is, why it's there.

Mike, saw your 2nd post while I was typing this...is there a way to re-route this or should I just leave it the way it is? Is it possible for you to take a picture of your setup so I can get an idea? I may just bite the bullet and buy a new cleaner assembly, the RTV and half assed look really bugs me.

This is an older pic, but it shows about as good as I can get ...Image As far as I know, this was how the factory did it...Hope it helps.

The hose connection has been moved to let the incoming air for the PVC to be filtered.

You have a very rare valve cover on that engine. No step down at the back. Very cool!

There are a few things with this motor that seem to be rare :D

I looked up the AutoLine part number on that tag and it's a carb...so why would a carb be put on top of a Carter carb? Does that make sense to anyone?

Fopar, the hole is actually inside the filter between the filter and the carb...I don't think it's being filtered, which worries me a little.

The PVC hose that goes to the manifold is the suction side, air has to be replaced in the crank case. The choice is filtered or non-filtered :?:

I was able to get a few closer pictures of the carb, and it looks as though this is in fact a 2-barrel carb....Carter model 0-2543.

This is making me think there is a lot more done to this car than I can see with my own eyes. Possible "super six" setup? I can get as many model tags as I can from the intake runners and exhaust if needed.

I just noticed too that with how the air cleaner cover sits on the top of the assembly, there is NO way there is any air getting to the carb...this motor has to be completely starved of air. I'd be lucky to fit a quarter between the inside of the cover and the base plate..

What you have there is the stock 1-barrel air filter assembly perched on top of a 2-barrel carb. That's causing your height problems and very poor filter efficiency.

Perhaps you can cut or grind the filter base to fit the BBD. That way, you can use the original assembly, keep the connections, and use a (relatively) inexpensive and common filter. If you do it, post pictures! There are other solutions.

The good news is, you're already got the coveted Super Six package installed. Fix the filter, and it should run pretty nice.

Your car looks so cool that my eyeballs done froze.

I was even thinking of cutting the cover so the only thing left is the top metal piece so the filter is exposed. Not the greatest solution but would allow the filter to "breath" a bit better.

I would really like a new assembly anyway just to ease my tension, I've heard the Edelbrock Pro-Flow are garbage but can easily be found at AutoZone so maybe for the time being that's not a bad idea, just get an adapter to go to the larger size air cleaner and be done.
