I am about to put a exhaust system on my car (1898 slant w 8.9 compression). I was wondering what size pipe is best 2", 2 1/4"or 2 1/2". I can't afford the mandrel bent stuff so Its going to be a knock off flow master and a standard bending machine. oh yea single exhaust.

Can you tell us more about the engine's state of tune? Is it stock or modified? Even a stock 198 can make good use of a 2 1/4" pipe. I don't like chambered mufflers as they tend to resonate/drone at highway speeds.

Yeah....Im the one who destroyed this rare, vintage automobile.....

It has a mild cam that works best around 1800 to 4500 rpm. and has a super six setup with a BBD off of a v-8. If has been ported and gasket matched. but pretty much stock besides that. I am going to take it to a muffle shop tomorrow. Finally found a guy that sounds like he knows what he is talking about and is reasonable.

Another vote for 2.25" pipe. It worked well on my mild build. Hopefully this guy carries thick wall aluminized coated steel pipe. It bends very well, no wrinkles and doesn't rust. The thin wall stuff from Midas Muffler shops will start rusting the next day here in the Northwest.....

I’ll second Josh’s droning comment. I have Turbo mufflers, still can’t figure why they are called mufflers, and the drone is unbearable mid 2000 rpm range on a long trip…

dropped her off this afternoon and the guy is going to put on a new exhaust flange and head tube out of 2 1/4" to the muffler. and 2" from the muffler to the rear and a knock-off Flowmaster. Hopefully be able to pick it up tomorrow after work. VRoom vroom!

I ran that combo for several years and it got very good mileage!

I am now running a 2.25" diameter long body Magna Flow muffler with 2.5" a internal tube with a nice 22" long 2" resonator, which makes it very very quiet system with no hint of a drone at all.

Flowmasters are a chamber style muffler... it will likely "drone" as discribed above.
A big "reverse flow" muffler is the way to go if you want the avoid a drone.

If the work is done, give it a test drive and don't be afraid to tell them to change-out the muffler, if you do not like the sound quality.
(If you find yourself saying: "I think I can live with that..." have them change it! )

Did You konw you olny need the frist and lsat letetr in the wrod to be albe to unedrstnad egnlish. Ok it's a 198 not a 1898.
But I got the car back tonight and it sounds good no droning I was a bit scared of that happening. The muffle guy did a pretty good job for $200 buck got a new 2 1/4" flange, 2 1/4" pipe from the exhaust manifold back and 2 1/4" pipe back past the axle, then he reduced it to 2" pipe for the last 30 some inches. It sounds great at idle, and I mean great, and has hardly any sound while cruising at about 55 to 60. (2200rpm) It does a little thing I have to get used to. Under hard acceleration (4000 rpm) just before she shifts it sounds a little like a british sports car. Other than that I am happy. I will get a video of it and upload it.
