Someone came by the shop today with a A 100.Claims, cause it says SUPER 225 on the air cleaner that it is a rare factory rated 165hp engine.I wanted to tell him he was nuts but thought I should do some research first.One of my books shows special order six 1966-1969.Is this a real deal???His A 100 is a 67.Was there such a thing and does anyone know for sure what the SPECIAL ORDER engine was.Very curious.Mark

"Super 225" decals were on the air cleaner of most every mid '60s Plymouth 225. Charger 225 decals were on the Dodge's. This guy is full of it. You could get special low compression engines and in bigger trucks get the 225-3. Just because his Dodge ended up with a Plymouth air cleaner doesn't mean anything other than that.

Stock 225 engine from what I understand, I had a 1969 Fury I for a demo derby car that the VIN reflected it was a special order 6 cyl. engine...It had all the trimmings of a luxury base model (almost a Fury 2 package), but was ordered with a 225 slant 6 automatic, instead of a 318...sometime in it's past someone grenaded the 225 and added a 383-2v...but forgot to swap the K-member...they used a chain on the passenger side to tie the motor mount down.....

Anyhow, I was told that Special Order was used when you asked for an engine that wasn't normally in the "line up" for the model/option class of vehicle you were ordering...(Similar to ordering a D-200 long wheel base truck which would normally come standard with the 318-2v as the base engine, and you have the dealer check the box for a 225 instead...)

And, check boxes we did in those days. There were few prescribed “optional equipment packagesâ€￾ like today’s line up on the order sheet. However, one could cheery pick from a long list of individual items which would generate some weird combinations.

Almost always; Engine size, PS, PB, AT, tinted glass (windshield, or all windows) , Air Conditioning, Convince Lighting, HD Suspension, Mirrors (interior stock, day-night; exterior left, right; remote), Power windows, Power locks, interior & exterior colors, (two tone, mono tone, three tone) vinyl roof (full, half, landau) trim, wheel covers, axle ratios, Suregrip, and on & on it went.

Dealers would order stock for their lot. Most dealerships in those days were small, and carried little inventory, so customers would often factory order the car of their dreams if dealer did not have one on the lot of their liking, wait six weeks, and it would show up.

My Dad most always ordered a car, because the dealer never had a base model, rubber mat, radio delete, three on the tree, stripper, cheep-o chick magnet example on the lot in his color... His one consistent option was four doors, and occasionally he went for the front seat foam padding up-grade. Once he sprang for the clear plastic seat covers. For what he paid for those rip-offs I suspect he could have had a radio.

At least he never purchased a Rambler, and I never had to suffer the social stigma that Mit Romney did while in High School. LOL.

The year I graduated from High School the folks purchased one of the schools dealer supplied Driver’s Ed cars, a 1970 4 door white Dodge Coronet Custom V8 with PS, AT, PB, AM-FM radio single dash speaker… Such a deal.

You won’t believe this, but the Driver’s Ed instructor’s name was Mr. Rhoads. Yup, Dusty Rhoads is what we called him in his absence. Dusty proceeded over a room full of early 60’s Ford Falcon driver training mock up simulators. The deal was; one would sit behind their standard shift Falcon, and drive to a movie being shown. Kind of a Wii for runner with vacuum tubes. I wish I could install one of these rigs in the man cave.
