Last time I checked, all Larry was selling at Clifford was a Hydraulic cam. Don't bother with 1.6 ratio rockers. All your going to get with them in a street car is accelerated wear.

Cut your losses and get the 280/270 RDP Erson mentioned above. Look in the Engine FAQ and click on the Erson Group Buy link.
Racers that frequent this site asked for those profiles in a cam. I run an Erson RV15M RDP, and the more I run it, the more I like it.

Since this is a street driven car, stick with your first choice, the Hurricane and a 500 Edelbrock would be my choice with your long rod build. An Edelbrock 600-625 CFM will be thirsty, and likely won't net a better time slip stop light to stop light.
Shorties are OK, but you could do better with long tube headers as far as power. Talk to Frank about those.

With the K1 rods: Now this is just my opinion; have spurt holes drilled in those rods. My contention is without them you aren't going to have adequate lubrication.

Thanks everybody for your advice.

Im going with the aussiespeed hurricane, Carter 500, and clifford shortys

Thinking about cam breaking it with the stock manifolds and 1Bbl cause this baby is gonna get hot and i dont want it discoloring the ceremic on my headers.

As for the cam, ive decided to stick with the one i have for now and see how it goes. Its really on borderline for how much compression i have with pump gas but it has the rpm range im looking for.
If i went for the bigger erson I would have to scream it to get any power and i would lose alot of my bottom end.
I'm going to throw in a .040 composite gasket to drop the compression a little and run an octane additive until the motor is broken in and see if i get any detonation.
Im also going to be running a bigger rad to help cool it down. Wish me luck :D

I don't believe you will lose all your bottom end with the Erson cam. I would heed these guys advice very carefully. Experimenting is fine, but my old set-up which was a text book recipe off this site was more than the one I made now.

Also, I've had really bad dealings with Clifford as has a lot of the members on here. That being said I would look for compression out of pistons, not permanently changing your head. Shaving the head is a good trick for those trying to get 9.0:1 compression with stock pistons, for example. But if you can change them, that is the "proper" way in my opinion.

that was my thinking with the Forged ones i have now, the compression is a little high, and i wont be suprised if i get detonation, but hopefully i will have a little luck with cooling it down enough and have the rpm range i want and still have the highest compression possible.

And i deffinetly agree that Clifford is sketchy, I guess i havent been dealing with him long enough for him to screw me with something.

Here we go man your around the same age brackets as me so heres my 2 cents I've run the erson 270 cam it's awesome. Then i put a bigger cam in with my 4spd both on a 108 lobe center new cam is uhhhhh i wanna say 240@.50 .510 lift 108 lobe has a nice powerband and lopes like a tiger after being punched. I drive my car everyday has 10.1 compression I can run lower octance Because i have before but i usually run premium in it now with the timing its at now. You have the same car as me so weight I would assume would be the same. I'm running a 3.73 gear gets good gas mileage with the 390holly and cliff intake shorty headers. I would personally grab a erson 280 you'll be happy with that unless you like lopy idles like me thats why i went to the new cam. Oh and I can hang with GT stangs w/o the bottle. Its a nice streetcar with some pep. Stick with 500cfm carb I cant help but feel as if the 390holly doesnt have much left in it.

Kev

With that much compression and a stick put a real camshaft in it. I'd run something around 250ish @ .050" with at least .540" lift.

The rpm range on a cam like that would be about 3800 to 6800.
when i build a track car with 4.10+ plus gears ill be sure to use that that cam.

this motor is built to handle those R's, but it would be useless in a car with 3.23 Gears, it would be a gutless wonder off the line . and especially useless when its not gonna be revved far past 5500 just because there is no need for it. I appreciate the advice, but it pertains to track cars not a highway geared street car built for high speeds at fairly low rpms

That cam RPM range is V8 thinking. Don't listen to any of those guys. More like 3000-6000 on a 225 motor.

I plan on taking the car out on the street and beating up on the pussy Fords and Chevs, and maybe the occasional drag pass.
Put boost into it!

Less cam
Less gear
Less compression = More Fun

Dude, if you think you'll be beating up on those pussy Fords and Chevys with no cam and a 3.23 gear you're in for an education.

It was a joke.

The car is NOT going to be a neck snapping drag machine obviously, but it will pull away from just about anything on the highway. It will get very good gas mileage and it will be a extremely fun car to drive. Thats exactly what i was looking for.
