Hmmm. I second the test of capping the fuel line, removing the carb, spraying some WD-40 or starting fluid in the intake and seeing if the motor will catch and run for a bit. At least that way you could eliminate the carb or conclude the carb was the problem.

Bummer of a way to spend christmas. :(

You seem to blame carb.
Based on that one continuing comment I offer again,....

If you simply do the rudementry I suggested above post you will know if it is the carb or not.

You can throw the carb in the trash and it will still start.!! Hellsfire they will run as described with zero carb. So, if you do what I sugested in above post, you will find your engine running on two jiggers of gas or not.

Seriously it will become obvious. Carb or not carb will be evident.

I guess it is too simple a thing to put in print, however you WILL know if it is carb or not. 15 minutes to do that.!! gl/6

Hey Reed, without the carb and spraying starting fluid into the intake
it runs

JUST LIKE I SAID ALREADY (hint hint)

Let's put it another way - maybe an easier to understand way -

this thing was running when I parked it
it stopped running when I put the rebuilt carb on it

so what part of getting pissed at the carb was not right???

The carburetor doesn't have feelings. Being angry with the carb won't help at all and will exhaust you. Fixing the carburetor will help. Set the dry float level and idle mixture screws. The means removing the float bowl and turning it upside down. The float level is close when the top of the float is parallel to the top of the float chamber. This is with a side-hung float. Center hung floats will be parallel front to back rather than side-to-side. About 1 1/2 turns out on the idle mixture screws should be plenty. Make sure there is no gas coming out of the boosters or bowl vent during cranking. If there is then some junk is probably stuck between the needle and seat. Unscrew the needle/seat assembly and examine it in good like with a magnifying glass and you may even see the culprit. The needle and seat must be spotless and undamaged. Put the old needle and seat back in if you have to. You did get a new needle and seat in the kit right? And it's a Holley kit not something generic?

+1 on the needle and seat, it's prob grooved and worn. Always one of the first things I replace on a carb thats been sitting.

The kit did not have new needles - but it did have new seats.

Looking at it all while taking it apart and putting it together, nothing "looked" grooved or....

This is not the first carb I have had to "rebuild" so it bugs the heck out of me as to what is wrong with it.

Will be taking it apart again tomorrow and see what I find.

PS - Carb has been running on this rig for over 5 years - best time in the 1/4 was 17.46

With these Holley carbs the needle and seat come as an assembly. Like this: Image

Look through the window and make sure there isn't anything on the needle or seat. Blow it out with carb cleaner or compressed air. It takes very little to keep the needle off the seat and the carburetor will flood.

oh - and Joshua - been there done that
carb was off and put together on the kitchen table
float was set as close to level as possible

this carb has a "sight" screw on the side and when I opened it a very, very small amount of fuel dribbled out - so I am guessing that it was so close to level on the rig that it should not have affected the running as much as it is - flooding the heck out of it! lol

Anyway, thanks again - will let ya'll know what I find after tomorrow

your car was running and all you did is kit the carb, then when you installed the carb, it spray fuel up the bowl vent and into the engine. have i got that much right? so are you able to get the fuel level right by the sight plug in the fuel bowl? what fuel pump are you using ? with or without a regulater?
