got a 83 d150 with looks like (bbd 2 bbl carter?)
runs fine most of the time, but rough sporadically then smooth at idle and stops. Fooled around with gas treatment and adjusting both idle jets and idle speed. Throttle shaft bushing appears to be tight. QUESTION? Should i just get a rebuild, if so, should it be Holley 2280 or another bbd? Also, WHERE do you send yours?

Truck is 4 speed with od and geared (low/hi) i.e. for mpg and eff.

Hi frcc, and welcome to the forum.
Before doing radical actions like replacing expensive parts, be sure that all other possible problem sources are eliminated.
Have you taken a look inside your carb, and checked that there is nothing clogging the jets?
Are you certain that the fuel supply is the problem, and not the ignition?
Do you have a 'lean burn' setup on your engine, and is it working as it should?
Is your fuel pump delivering what it should?
Is your fuel filter OK?
How about a tank with lots of crud in it, clogging the lines and filter?

There are endless possibilities for things to go wrong!
In each section we have a 'sticky' FAQ, which gives answers and solution suggestions to a lot of commonly found problem areas.

Start by identifying the carb and ignition system on your engine, different models act in different ways. Get a manual for you truck, it is essential that you have some reference material. Then come back to us with the results of your findings of some of the points above, and we'll steer you in the right direction.

yes my 83 d150 has the ecc module on the air filter and the dual element ignition etc. I suspect its the problem after reading here several posts. The previous owner already removed the computer bbd carb, but, it is in poor condition and not complete. They did no ignition upgrade as the original cleaan burn dual pickup dist is still there. I suspect the fix would be to complete the upgrade.

I am reading posts here to remove carb and replace w/ good condition non computer bbd carb and upgrade the dist to electronic mech vac adv. Also reading about hei upgrade. AM I ON THE RIGHT path? Thanks folks in advance.

Yes, you're definitely on the right path, provided you get no trouble when it comes to laws and regulations regarding changing original stuff under the hood. You have also already seen some of the enormous amount of info in the forum, it will always save you time and money if you make a quick search before doing work on your car and engine, for example searching for posts with 'HEI', gave 2153 hits, 'lean burn conversion' gave 88 hits...

On the ignition side, you need to get an electronic distributor to replace the lean burn type, a GM ignition module and a relay to power it, a good e-core coil, and while you're at it, some new good plug wires - if you still use the original ones. When you find a distributor, for the best results you should recurve it, see the engine FAQ 'Timing Curve/Recurve information'. I see you have used the FAQ's already, in the electrical FAQ you will find all the numbers, and links to more threads with tips on mounting. Here is a link containing the GM module heat sink part number, some good links, and my own version of HEI for my Aspen. Gm Hei Module Conversion Troubles

Do you have a 2-bbl BBD carb? See this thread for some comments on getting a newer carb to replace it, if that is necessary.

If you have an electronic camera, do yourself a favour and take some 'before' and 'after' pics, they may be helpful to both yourself and others.

I am in Texas, and they do inspection on vehicles after 1966. They do visuals using the fender diagram as a component guide. They visually check for their existence. They do not do performance tests in this area yet. But as i understand it, when they do, they are more lenient on older vehicle technology. The only thing i can do is not disturb the original charcoal canister, its plumbing, valve cover pcv vlv, carb & misc vacuum lines, smog pump & plumbing, o2 sensor, catalytic muffler and the original ecc air filter housing. As long as the hardware is there i don't think there will be a problem. I don't think i need to be so stealthy as put the hei module etc in the computer housing to hide it, as it can be reasonable assumed that the upgrade in addition to the original components do not detract from actual emissions. Also with the upgrades the system should pass a performance test i would think. Ahh but bureaucrats !!!!!, who knows? What do you folks think?

I live in Texas as well, but all that my '78 Volare needs is a safety inspection. Where in Texas do you live? I would have thought that your '83 would be exempt from all but a safety inspection.
