If you keep stomping on the gas, can you keep it running? I had a Holley 1920 like that. The idle circuit was fubar, had to replace it.

Also, did you try a known good ballast resistor?

Make sure the throttle cable has enough slack to allow the primary to close completely. I've made that mistake before and spent a few minutes scratching my head as to why an engine wouldn't idle below 900 RPM before I remembered to put some slack back in the throttle cable.

Also, some people have reported that the Mr. Gasket adapter to run the big two barrel carbs on the Super Six intake are prone to vacuum leaks unless sealed with RTV sealant or JB Weld. Double check you aren't sucking air around the adapter plate.

cable is long enough and slack enough
plus I have a spring pulling it back
and it shuts completely

I also sprayed carb cleaner around the carb and heard no changes in engine speed

I will try it again as soon as I get it to run again

and again - this has electronic ignition and no ballast resistor used

I got it to run!

So I let it stay running and warm up
Farted around with the idle screws etc
Had it where it sounded okay

right about the time the thermostat opened (is my guess)
it sprayed all the water out of the radiator!!!
???????????????????????????????????????????????

so I let it sit for a little while and added water
took about 1/2 a gallon

checked the oil
perfect

fired it up again and watched
water lines to the heater are both hot

waited - right about when the thermostat opens
this time without the radiator cap on

it burped and pushed all the water out
was like NiagraFalls - lol
hahahahahahaha

wa
did
i
say
about bad luck???

hahahaha
okay - what is happening with this thing now guys??
hahaha

Sounds like the thermostat is NOT opening. Probably have an air bubble at the thermostat.

Jack up the front end or point the nose up a moderate hill to help any air bubbles work their way past the thermostat. Then run it with the rad cap off and when it get to the point where the coolant is flowing good fill the rad until the coolant is about three inches below the neck of the radiator.

3"s below???????

That puts the liquid in the middle of the radiator Reed!! LOLOL

I ripped the damn thing out and fired it up - it was a 190 I think
forgot already and I just looked at it 20 minutes ago!

Gonna get a 185 in the next day or two
Anyway, it's running - need to adjust the spring that pulls everything shut but it seems to be getting closer

Dan on the thermostat, drill a small hole about 1/16" in the flange portion. This will alow the air not to be trapped behind the thermostat and doesn't hurt the function of it either.

I would run a 195 in it. Keeps engine temp up=more power and more MPG. Lowers emissions. Makes it harder to over heat. HOW? Slows down the water going through the radiator which gives it more time to loose heat. Running with out a thermostat will over heat-water runs through radiator to fast and can't give up its heat. If you have a after market over flow tank you can fill it to the top. If you are running a totally stock radiator then you need to fill to no higher than 2" below the filler, you need to leave room for thermal expansion.

the one I took out has a hole in it already!!
learned that one from ya'll
years ago!

I think it's just toast is all

at least it's back running again even if it is acting like the timing is still off
and I am thinking way off

i put the light to it and it is shaking around 2"s away from the mark!
lol

guess i'll just keep messing with it till it get's where it runs okay again and save some money so i can make a trip up north to see my bud and visit a few of ya'll along the way

maybe by the time i get back from Tacoma it will be running in the 15's??

hahahahaha

yea right! be lucky to make it to town right now!!

okee dokee

new thermostat in
and it runs fine
(drilled new hole in it too Richard!)

now I haven't taken it out on the open road yet - but it's alive
still not happy with the way it runs
but i am sure it has to do with the timing/distributor
which is causing the carb to not have enough uummpphh to keep it going?

if it had a choke on it - it would probably work better
or more than likely - a smaller carb would work better

anyway

hard to tell where it heads next
since this is newyearseve and tomorrow is the new year
it means i am probably not going very far for a day or two

happy new year ya'll
later
dam

oooppppsss

i meant

Okay - in the snow, it started and I ran it down to the store - 3.5 miles.

It runs okay once it's warmed up but I noticed that when I stomp it - it acts like it's loading up. Also, I need to back the dist off a bit as it's pinging when I run up the hills.

Still not running right - but at least it's running again.

Wow, you got some gremlins in there for sure. That carb looks like an 1850 cut the other way than a 2300, you know common throttle shaft and such. Anyway, I used to do a lot of dicking with Holley 4bbls mostly 3310's and the big 850 DP's and found some info from a Demon distributor in Beaver Creek, OR. Anyway, he told me and I found it in writing later, that if you cant get an idle with the transfer slot on the primary side covered up until the width is the same as the hight showing (shaped like a perfect square) Just a C hair showing, you need to open the secondary butterfly with either the adjustment found UNDER the boss that has the secondary linkage stop (needs almost a jewelers screwdriver to reach up in the well) a touch to let some air through the secondary, or start drilling holes in the secondary throttle blade. Holley built in this adjustment on some of their HP carbs, right down through the air cleaner hole with an allen wrench. This should get you back on the idle circuit. Then its jetting from there. There was a way to put your hand over the intake and if the RPM's fell or rose that told you what direction to jet, and also if you cant get the idle screws to make any adjustments in the richness or idle quality, you were still jetted wrong. Look up "Demon tuning" on a Google search, that might get that carb in the ballpark. Then again, a carb too large is murder to tune.

Wow - forgot to respond to ya'll and let ya know what's happnen!

got it running - and once it warms up -(NO choke ya know) it runs pretty well - EXCEPT that when I come to a stop, if I do not pay attention to it, it will die

in park or neutral - the idle is about 900 when warm
and in gear around 750

i am positive that I have a vacuum leak - not around the carb, but on the damn intake/exhaust gaskets again

i really need to get the good set and get rid of the cheapies on it

i took a guy out on a quick run - he has seen this thing for years and was curious as to what it ran like - took him out to the freeway and scared the crap out of him !!! LOLOL

we got back and he told the people he ran into about the run and how it was no where near like the van his "brother" once had

this thing runs like a sob when it is out and about - it's just that it has a hard time off the line if i do not pay attention - it has the bog crap going at this point

it definitely has a TON of mid-range - like when i hit the onramp for the freeway and drop it into 2nd gear (at 40+mph)and stomp it - i can pass anything on the freeway that i want - even out on the road doing whatever the traffic is doing - (and we all know that freeway traffic is not doing 70!!)

all i have to do is punch it and away we go - and it sounds good too

remember ya'll - this is a brick - and it flies when i want it to
seems to be getting really good fuel mileage at this point again too
doesn't matter how much weight i have in it either

Reed sent me a 2280 carb and it scares me to think about changing it right now - partly because i do not have all the gaskets it will need to install it - but also because it is HALF the size of the 500 on it right now!

told Reed that it looks like it should be on one of my lawn mowers compared to the 500 on it right now!! hahahahaha

anyway - between
no choke
unsure of adjustments of carb and timing
no kick down linkage
"plain jane torque converter" -(need something a little bigger than stock)
bad back
no money
and blahblahblah

it's running fine for now!! LOL

hay - it's running and reliable again for now
so i am not complaining!!! (ya right!!!LOLOL)

hahahahah
later
dan
