Skip to the last paragraph if you don't want to read the story.

Also called a multiple electrical connector. Anyhow, finally got the engine in my 65 valiant running. Runs great right up to the point that I'm cruising down the highway and I start getting purple smoke coming out from under the hood.

After getting towed home I start searching wires one by one and find that the genius that I bought the car off of had just crammed wires into the bulkhead connector. One of them had wobbled loose just enough to arc of of another wire and caused the smoke. Along with this the bulkhead connector melted.

SO my first question is does anyone have spare floating around or a part number for it? My second question if the bulkhead connector is no longer available would it be problematic to just jerk it out and drop in a screw terminal board?

What year/model vehicle are we talking about? All bulkhead connectors are not the same.

I personally do not like the Mopar bulk head connector. It is not protected from the weather enough. It was there for ease of manufacturing. They could simply plug in an engine compartment harness and be done with it. I am sure there are other, better ways to do this.

But if you want to stay stock, I am pretty sure you can find one. A junk yard is a decent place to start. Then suppliers of NOS parts. Do a web search. But as Charlie said, you will need to know the model and year.

Year one does sell the spade connectors that plug into it. ACtually, the connector itself just holds one wire on the inside and one wire on the outside, which both have connectors. The so-called bulkhead connector carries no current.

It's possible to replace the stock bulkhead with something fabricated, but it would be a lot of work. The wires can be removed easily from the plastic unless it's a melted mess, in which case you can cut them free. A number of models over the years share the same plastic, and the repro harness guys must have a source for the plastic.

Usually, though, it's usually just those connections that carry a lot of current that get damaged, and the factory often routed HD alt. wiring away from the bulkhead connector to avoid that.

It's a lot easier to fix with the harness out of the car.

He said it was a 1965 Valiant in the first post-Just do not know if it is a six or a eight.

Opps, sorry, my eyes just skipped right over that.

I missed it too. The shop manual shows the same bulkhead connector diagram for both v-8 and six. I would be very surprised if they were not identical.

Have you determined if there is damage to the plastic yet?

Some times there is a difference from a 6 to the 8 and I did not have a manual to look at so I covered the bases. I had heard (years ago-do not ask which decade) that the main problem with the bulk head connectors was washing the engine down at the car wash and not drying out the connectors after. That caused the corrosion problem and failure later in life.

Okay to add on Yes it is a 65 valiant and it is a slant. No real point in posting an 8 on a 6er forum :). The bulkhead connector is melted in the lower right corner (when sitting in the drivers seat).

Honestly I could see several different ways to go about fixing this but I'm trying to restore the car not modify it.

Cheers
Kris

All the chassis stuff is the same, so posting a "V8" question would certainly not be out of line. I'm sure there are people here who are also knowledgeable about the V8s. I have a 273 in my Barracuda (but I wish it was a 6!).

The engine compartment wiring is different for the V8, only because of the different locations for the components, but the wiring in the cab is the same.

You can get a new bulkhead connector from Year One.

You have to beg them to do this. They ordinarily do not sell them separately, but only as part of a reproduction wiring harness made by Evans Wiring. Since Year One is the exclusive distributor of Evans' product, Evans will not sell to you directly.

Cost is $95.00

You might be better of ordering the entire interior harness.
