Hey everyone

Just had a question. My truck has an np435 tranny with a 6.69-1 granny. I never use the granny unless pulling a loaded trailer which I've only done once. Ive been thinking of an 833od because on the highway my truck spins at about 2800rpm at 65mph. My question is, how long are the throws between gears? On my tranny they are very long and I'd like to not have such long throws. I know the 833 was in cars also, so do they have shorter throws like other car trannys? As well as better hey mpg. Also do they make a shift kit for the 833? And any recommendations about the 833od?

Thanks
Cody

I haven't ever driven a truck with the tranny that you have, but I do have a 87 truck with the A833OD in it. It is not a "short" throw shifter, but it is not too bad. If you are looking for a sportier feel than what you have now, I don't think it would do it for you. As far as gear ratios, DD gave them to you already. The OD gear really makes it a 3-speed tranny with the added benefit of an OD. It does not lend to a sporty feeling compared to a regular A833 which has better gear ratios without huge dropoffs between shifts. The main benefit of having the A833OD is at highway cruising speeds. The OD really lowers the engine rpm at those speeds and helps with mileage. On my stock engine, I have to downshift to 3rd gear when I hit small hills at 50-55mph.

Don't know if I helped or confused you. Others might have a differing opinion, too. Just relaying my experiences to you.

Brian

Thanks for the ratios doc. I had them already though. And Bryan I'm just looking at it for hwy. I don't have much insulation in my cab so the drone on the hwy is insane.the throws on my tranny are very far 1st to 2nd is probably near a foot and 3-4 is probably at least 6 inches. I read somewhere they put them in light duty dump trucks because it also has a pto on the pass side.

Since the 833 has an external shift mechanism, you can always do some fabrication to modify the linkage levers on the shifter (make them longer) or at the trans (make them shorter).

With enough time, money, & cleverness,- anything is possible.

Some of this is the shift mechanism...but it's mostly the large RPM drop between gears...a regular A-833 will have maybe a 2-300 rpm drop between gears the ratios are 'tight' or narrow... the A-833 OD with even a moderate drag gear will have a 1500-2000 rpm drop in 1-2 (it gets worse with large tires and highway axle ratios)...the best I've gotten is the 3-OD shift with 4.56's on P205's at about 400rpm...it's a "wide" ratio tranny.

But if you aren't hauling heavy loads(don't put 6 engine blocks in the bed of the pickup), and you are running a moderate gear to make up for the heavy truck and taller tires...(say 3.91's and a 28" tall tire), the OD can make some mileage back and keep the engine in the torque band for best power and maybe good mileage if everything else is dialed in, on the long stretch.

Remember if you do this swap, you'll have to find an overdrive floor hump and cut it out of a truck. I don't think your floor hump will clear the 833 tranny.

I have a hurst shifter and assembly on my 833od when i swapped a 904 to the 833od my throw between gears is probably only a couple inches i'll have to go play with it to make sure.

Keep in mind too that one reason for such a long throw is the length of the shifter itself. A truck will simply have a longer throw because the shifter has to come up far enough for you to reach it.

An 833od shifter handle for a car likely wont be long enough for you to use easily.

Ok thanks guys. Thor now that I think of it that makes sense. I saw on a couple bronco forums that they had a shift kit called a gear bangers shifter for the np435 it uses a rod from the shifter to a shifter that is mounted on the floor, it's kinda hard to explain here I a link with some pictures of the shifter: http://classicbroncos.com/forums/showth ... 81&page=15 it seems pretty simple. If I had a welder I could fab up my own.

The throw with the factory shifter are about 3/4 of what you have now-remember that from the factory the a 833 has a hurst shifter with a non interchangeable arm. Third gear is direct and od is .70. If you have a hard time finding parts for the trany PASSION PERFORMANCE in pa has EVERY SINGLE PART for it and that includes gear ratio changes. The factory trans was alumium case with cast iron tail and long tail shaft. If you find a used one,the couterhafts get the wear and if its beat on with alot of horse the cluster gears shear or greande.( 300 + house, 400+ ltlbs torque)
