OK- here is my dose of FABO advice-

Slant sixes never run right! The best way to fix your pinging is to swap in a 440!

Yes -- all of that. It's not a simple routine case of ping caused by faulty state of tune. It's internal to the engine. I'm trying to figure out the mechanism, is all.

What do the plugs look like?

Compression test?

Leakdown test?

Vacuum readings?

Litres of oil per 1000kms?

valve timing map?

......or are we just going to guess?

have you taken off the valve cover started , let idle and observed..look/listen?

I just did that to adj my valves on our 1968..nice show !

Electronic ignition was standard equipment in 1973. I do not believe it was a delete option. If so everything was built with electronic ignition.

Sorry, I couldn't resist the Monty Python reference since we are taking about the machine that goes PING!

Seriously though, it sounds like Dan has investigated all the possible causes of spark knock/preignition. I think this will wind up being an odd internal mechanical problem. That much timing chain slack on a motor with under 60k miles is unusual. I am going to bet a dollar the that problem will wind up being something like loose connecting rod cap bolts allowing the piston to rattle a bit or a loose wrist pin allowing some piston slap to happen, or an exhaust leak.
