Besides, if it's not running during the lash adjustment, you don't get the "satisfaction" of hearing the clattering disappear as you go down the line.
How to best set the valve lash on a SL6 has been argued a lot.
I've had times where the valve lash has been off enough that the engine won't stay running and a cold lash is needed just to get it to at least run rough. not that its proper way to adjust the lash, a cold lash adjustment just has its time and place.

Did you re-check the valve lash after tightening the head bolt?
Better yet...
Warm engine, retorque the head & re-adjust the valve lash... to the loose side of the settings.

Thanks! I just spoke with my mechanic and we had come to a similar conclusion that you're saying. I just found out that his order of events was that he tightened the head bolt, then adjusted the valves and then attempted to start the car. I had initially thought he went straight from tightening the head bold to starting the car..... so it sure seems like the valves could be the ticket. I am hoping!

Well backing off on the valves helped me at least get an idle back! Pretty rough and gutless when I step on the peddle.

I am now starting to think the head gasket is messed up....fair amount of oil right back by that left rear head - enough to drip down to the ground. GRRRRR.

I think most people just run standard Felpro gaskets in street motors... there are a few copper ones out there for the more extreme builds.

I think you should check to see if the deck/head needs a skim, could possibly use this chance to bump up the compression.
