Hey, I'm back. I look forward to catching up with the board again, but I've got a bit of a problem I need to handle first.

My '64 Valiant daily driver's motor mounts were apparently worse than I thought and it put my fan through the radiator...again. I pulled a spacer last time and thought I was okay with well over a 1.5" clearance, but apparently not.

Fortunately, I can get the radiator fixed easily around here. Unfortunately, the impact damaged one of the fan blades, so I'll need to get a new one.

Anyone have a favorite engine fan that they'd like to suggest. I'm in Florida and have A/C, so it needs to move a ton of air. I'd like to avoid electric, just for the sake of aesthetics.

Also, while I'm asking: When swapping motor mounts, I've heard it can be done with just a floor jack and a block of wood. I did a search here, but didn't find much. I don't have an engine hoist, so I think this is my only option. If anyone has any suggestions/warnings that could save me breaking the car, myself or the garage, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks so much!

Thought i'd throw this out here just in case you change your mind and are looking for electric. I have some electric fans from a Subaru i'd sell ya cheap.

If you want to try a clutch fan, check out one from a mercedes. Its what I am going to do. Just need to find one from a car with a V belt and look for one with a lot of blades on it. There are 9 and 11 blade verisions I believe.

For the motor mounts,do one side at a time. Remove the the nuts, using a jack with a block of wood on it slowly jack up the front cornor of the pan of the side you are replacing untill you have enough clearence to replace the mount, lower it slowly, and reinstall the nuts, then repeat for the next mount. Very easy, just take your time, and you will be fine.

Thanks, guys. I do think I'd like to stick with the mechanical fan on this, but I appreciate the offer. Jared, I actually have two Mercedes clutch fans, but because of the lack of clearance due to the early A-body setup and the fact that I made the stock radiator a 3 core, they won't fit. If you think you could use them, I'd be happy to trade you both of them for the 7 blade. I don't remember how many blades each of them has, but I can PM you with pics if you'd like.

Welcome back, Chuckness! You might give Charlie a call sometime soon and go check out a certain something he is harboring for me...

Sounds like someone offered you a stock 7 blade, and I believe I have one too. Those flow a lot of air and are dead simple.

I have also used the 1 piece plastic flex fans (flex-a-lite?) and those work well and are light and cheap. They don't blow up like the metal flex fans. You may need a slightly longer spacer to move the blades away from the pulleys and water pump. The Chevy pattern is same as Mopar. I even trimmed mine down some on the end of each blade with a tinsnips and still had good cooling with assumedly a bit less drag.

Lou

Good to see you again, Lou! Yeah, I think we have a trade worked out with my old Mercedes clutch fan that I don't have the clearance for. I'll keep that solution in mind too. I still have an extra spacer that I took off after I had the radiator rebuilt. If a flex fan was backspaced right, it would probably work.

The radiator repair guy says it's probably a bad tranny mount that made the engine buck forward. I did have to stop suddenly on the way home. That might have done it.

Anyone have tips on tranny mount replacement?

Okay, just ordered a new transmission mount from Imperial Services. I just realized my car is probably still rolling on the original transmission mount, since I didn't know where to get a replacement for it when we redid the mounts in 1997.

I ran the MOPAR offset fan blade and clutch fan unit Summit Racing sells for several years. It was very nice, but then upgraded to two electric fans which I really like and a big air dam under the car to push are up into the radiator. The engine and intake stays at a more even temp by not having a stock fan running all the time. The electric fans only turn on for a short while when stopped or during heat soak after shut off. The runners stay at a more even temp and the plugs look very even from cylinder to cylinder.
