Hey all.. I am a newcomer with an '86 D100. Just acquired the "raccoon" and the guy before me made a whole bunch of mods though I believe they are mostly cosmetic. (Edelbrock air cleaner and filter on the PCV valve) He also tore out the A/C. As I work on each problem one by one and become acquainted with my new truck, I noticed the oil dipstick tube broke off at the block. How do I fix this?

I'm sure this will be my first of many posts as I work through this project.

86 D-100 "The Raccoon"

I have used a wide variety of things with good success. Sometimes you can get lucky with the right width screw driver by sticking it in the hole and giving it a a twist and pulling up. You can also use a easy out or even an oversize drill bit. Once it fits and catches you can twist it and pull up.

I also have an 86 D100 that I've been working on and slowly making the repairs from the advice of all the knowledgeable folks here on this forum. I have the exact same problem, my dipstick tube is broken right at it's base. I believe the base is attached to the oil pan. I'm going to try Aggressive Ted's suggestion first but I was also considering replacing pan, since it's bent a bit, with one from this website. Check it out.

Yep, like he said. They are just press fit into the block. If yours was like mine, it was about 80 feet long! I used one for a small block chebby and just marked new add and full lines with a file.

If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

Not quite a press fit-theres a retaining bracket and bolt close to the base. Instead of a screwdriver see about a metal rod with a hook on the end to catch it from the inside,the use vise grips to hold the rod and gently tap it it.Usually the tubes just pull out by twisting it gently when they are intact.

I have screwed a lag bolt in the stub to pull it out, then bought some steel fuel line the right size, cut the flair off in one end, tapped it into the hole, and cut it off with a tubing cutter at the right height.

On the subject of dipsticks, we seem to have lost ours 3 times? i can't for the life of me see how they can fall out? especially since we have headers on out motor so they sit over the dipstick. Any one else ever had this problem, RAY

Actually, on slant six trucks and vans, the dipstick does not use the regular hole in the block on the driver's side above the pan rail. The dipstick actually threads into the driver's side of the oil pan below the pan rail. There is a tiny plug that was pressed into the block to fill the normal hole.

This is assuming the motor is still using the original truck specific oil pan.

i could be wrong, but mine is broke off level at the base. the previous owner just had the dipstick dropped in there.


i changed the oil and filled to proper level, dropped the dipstick in the hole and it sits on the bottom and is just loose in the hole, then pulled it out two or three times to check the level and took my pocket knife and marked where the proper fill level is.

id love to replace the tube, but this works so its not a big deal for me right now.

Original motor? Did it have the correct truck oil pan?

Interesting. Every slant six powered truck and van I have ever looked at had the dipstick tube going into the oil pan, not the block.

Here is an 83 van motor on a stand in my garage. There was a plug in the hole in the block when I got it, but i popped it out to clean the motor and promptly lost the plug. Doh.



Here is the motor in my brother's 83 Dodge van. The block came from a 76 Volare, so it originally used the hole in the block, but the oil pan came from a mid 70s truck, so it had the dipstick in the pan. My brother is paranoid about oil leaks, so he uses lots of RTV sealant.





Any chance you have any pictures of your 77 truck motor with the block mounted dipstick?
