so installing the balancer, i noticed the rubber was very cracky and buldging a bit, as i was pushing it on the crank with my hands, i noticed the outer ring was moving alot, so i took a rubber mallet and took a few decent hits, (hot hard at all, but not too light, and the ring basicly popped off the center hub. so im sure the timing mark was in the wrong place to begin with.

so what are my options for balancers, i dont really want a junkyard one and take a chance, i figure a new one would suffice. its a stock motor, i dont need anything super fancy

One of these new Australian-made ones will do nicely.

that my only choice or are there others? im ok with the price, just wondering if theres anything out, maybe with degree marks or something nice to have.

If you want super premium with degree marks (and no possibility to bolt on an auxiliary drive sheave for P/S or A/C) then the one you're after is this one.

Me, I put one of these factory heavy 3-groove units on my '73 Dart with P/S and A/C. Does it work? Well, it drives all three belts just fine and so far the crank hasn't broken, so I guess that's a "yes".

hmm, well i will probably never install A/c, and for power steering, ill probably never do that either, i read its kinda a pain to convert my 65 over, needs new column and what not.. ahhh no thanks, i really like manual steering anyways. so looks like im after that first choice, thanks buddy, i really appreciate it.

Is to contact Damper Doctor or Damper Dudes and have your damper reconstructed...

I've had both a cast crank damper and 2 mid-70's forged crank dampers redone by them and they have held up to daily driving and drag rpm runs...Doc pointed me to Damper Doctor in Cali. Timing marks for the dampers were indexed correctly.

FYI- I once met an old-timer at a Slant Six Club of America meet who had an absolutely beautiful 1964 Valiant wagon. It was powered by a seriously worked over 170. The owner had done all sorts of neat custom touches like replaced the water jacket plug on the passenger side of the motor with a little brass spigot to make flushing the water jacket easier.

He said that he used a Deusenberg vibration dampener and it fit perfectly on the slant six. Just another option for you.

Valiant1966, I can't think of any reason why the heavy 3-groove truck damper wouldn't work on your '66. And the price is certainly right! Be advised it was a bit of a tough/tight installation the first time. A minute or two lapping/polishing the ID of the damper and the OD of the crank snout with crocus cloth probably would've made it a little easier.

Reed, I saw that wagon around NE 65th Street, Seattle some time ago. Thought it was a '63. A few stories have filtered back to me about it; seems the owner is, um, uh, ruh, erm, a very creative and imaginative thinker. Whatever, he's got a nice car.

Dan- Would the 3 belt balancer work on my 64 Dart? I do not have A/C yet, but the parts car it is coming off is in my driveway now. The balancer on the parts car looks rough, and it has an add on pully set-up, instead of a space for an extra belt.(Dealer Add-On A/C?) I do not plan on ever havig PS.

You know what, now that I think back on it, I believe you are right. It has been years since I saw the car, but I do believe it was a 63. He used to do burnouts with the 170. Very nice wagon.
