Hi Guys..

If the Charcoal canister is off the fender and you shake it should you hear bits of "stuff" rattle in the can like a Maraca?

the One on my duster is sounds like a shaker when I rattle it.. I was not sure if it sould be like that or not..

If not does anyone know where i can find a new one?

Thanks,

Greg

Mine have never rattled. Unless you are trying to keep it stock, I suspect you can use any can off a car with the same number of tube hooks ups. Mine had three. I added one to my 69 off a later model car, just to try and hold down the smell of gasoline around the car. That was pretty much a failure since the tank had a vent in it then. :?

Thanks Sam..

I do need it to be stock appearing.. I think I will just get one at the Junk yard with the same number of ports - Also will be looking for a non baby rattle type.

Greg, Time to replace as the particles will clog up the carb after a while. My truck has two of them and the "bag" let go and made a mess cloging up the idle curicut, starting out as a ruff idle then getting worse till it no longer would idle.Pulled the carb and it looked like coffee grounds inside. If you fine a source for replacement let us know.

I got the truck smogged before it all happened and you can use compressed air to blow the canister out getting all the "grounds" out so it will pass visual inspection.

Get a new charcoal can; a used one is likely to be as bad (or almost so) as your existing one. Emptying out the charcoal and running an empty can is an unwise idea; not only will it create a fire hazard under the hood, but also a working can saves you money by trapping gasoline that would otherwise float uselessly off into the air. Chrysler P/N 4723 551 is a 4-port service replacement for many '80s-'90s applications and can readily be adapted to earlier cars. You need two vent-in ports ("Bowl" or "Carb" and "Tank"), and one purge-out port ("Purge"). Plug any unused ports.

Actually, RockAuto has the Standard CP3167, which is that brand's cross ref from the Chrysler number. Decent price, and it includes the purge valve.

Thanks for the references and part#'s

How woud this work on my 79 duster with an EFi retrofit??

I currently have a 3 port can (that needs replaced) But since the carb is long gone I Have the "bowl"' port plugged.. The "tank" port still goes to the tank and the "Purge" port goes to Engine Vacuum.

The can mentioned in this thread has a built-in purge valve right on top. Hook it up in accord with discussion here.

Hey Greg, Is Adamsburg auto wreckers still there.?? I remember two fellows named Mike & Mike Ran the place.Right by the front door outside was NOS 68 Coronet quarter pannels lying in the dirt. When I moved I gave them a bunch of parts cars that I had. I'm sure they are long gone.
